The Hanjiang River flows through Shaanxi and Hubei provinces and joins the Yangtze River at Longwang Temple in Hankou, Wuhan. The river length 1.577 km, and the basin area 1.959 years ago was 1.743 million square km, ranking first among all the basins in the Yangtze River system. After 1959, it was reduced to159,000 square kilometers. The main stream is in the upper reaches above Danjiangkou in Hubei Province, and the water system has the characteristics of narrow valley, about 925km long.
The Hanjiang River, also known as Hanshui River and Hanjiang River, is the largest tributary of the Yangtze River. Modern hydrology believes that there are three sources: Shui Yang in the Central Plains, Qushui in Beiyuan and Daiyu River in Nanyuan, all of which are located in ningqiang county, Shaanxi Province at the southern foot of Qinling Mountains. When it flows through Mianxian (now Mianxian) and flows eastward to Hanzhong, it is called Hanshui River. The section from Ankang to Danjiangkou was called Canglang Water in ancient times, and Xiangyang was nicknamed Xiangjiang River and Xiangshui below.
Hanjiang River is the longest tributary of the Yangtze River and occupies an important position in history. Often juxtaposed with the Yangtze River, Huaihe River and Yellow River, they are collectively called "Jianghuai Hehan".
Geomorphological characteristics of Hanjiang River
According to the stratigraphic situation of Hanjiang basin, the basin has not been invaded since the orogeny at the end of Triassic. Most of the Hanjiang River Basin is mountainous, with a mountainous area of about123,000 square kilometers, accounting for 70% of the total basin area (174,000), a hilly area of about 22,000 square kilometers, accounting for 13%, and a plain area of about 27,000 square kilometers, accounting for 16%.
The plain area of the basin is very small, with only four plains: Hanzhong Plain, Xiangyang-Yicheng Plain, Tangbaihe Plain and the downstream plain. Among the four plains, Hanzhong Plain, Xiangyang-Yicheng Plain and the downstream plain are all flooded plains with flat terrain. It's just that Tangbaihe Plain is mostly an ancient alluvial plain, commonly known as gangdi, which has been slightly divided, and the coverage area of flood leveling principle is small.
