Shangshu Temple in Song Dynasty

Chen Shangshu Temple was built in Baoyantang in Ming Dynasty, located in Shaxu West Street, Shiqiao Street, Panyu District, Guangzhou.

This ancestral hall was built in memory of Chen Xian, the ancestor of the Chen family in Shaxu. It was founded in the thirty-first year of Jiajing in Ming Dynasty (AD 1552) and has a history of 453 years.

The building faces south, with an area of 1354.7 square meters.

There is a square in front of the door, with an area of 1672 square meters.

The old residents in the village told reporters that there are six flagpole clips on both sides of the ancestral hall, and now there are no flagpole clips.

On the east and west sides of the head gate, Qingyun Lane leads directly to the back garden. On the top of the stone horizontal tablet, two vigorous characters are engraved in regular script, namely "Qingtian" in the east and "Washing the Sun" in the west.

This ancestral hall is a group of buildings with three entrances and two patios.

On entering the facade, the three rooms are 16.4m wide and the two rooms are 7.8m deep. A pair of granite stone lions in front of the gate are magnificent, which is a typical Lingnan stone lion craft. The beams and arches are beautifully carved out of wood.

Two rooms enter the lobby, three rooms are 16.4m wide and three rooms are 12.2m deep. There are stone guardrails on both sides of the front, and people are engraved on stone tablets in the columns.

The width of the three rooms is16.4m and the depth is10.2m.. There is a stone guardrail in front, and there is a southern lion on both sides of the stone steps in front of the door. There is a red sandstone altar in the hall, and there is a shrine made of mahogany on it, which is used to place the ancestral shrine.

It is still a place where people worship their ancestors.

According to historical records, Chen Xian was a scholar in Yuanfeng seven years in the Northern Song Dynasty. He was appointed as an official of the Ministry of Industry, assistant minister of rites and editor of Chinese books by the Hanlin Academy, and his wife Jia was appointed as his wife by the court.

Chen, an expert who participated in the cultural relics investigation, told the reporter that according to the genealogy of Chen brought back by Kengtou Village in Nancun Town, Shaxu Village in Shiqiao Street and Chigang Village in Shilou Town, and the descendants of Chen who moved to Peru, Chen Xian was the19th grandson of Chen Xuande, a former general of the Eastern Jin Dynasty who settled in Kengtou Village (later generations changed his name to "Yuan De" because he avoided the Qing Dynasty). His father is Chen Yuefu and his grandfather is Chen Rong.

Song Huizong gave Chen Xian a precious inkstone.

The Genealogy of Shaxu Village records an anecdote of Chen Xian and Song Huizong Evonne: the royal gift of Chen Xian from Hui Zong Emperor Zeng Zeng was "Bao Qingtian inkstone", and a five-character poem engraved on the back of the inkstone was given to him: "The horse is famous for its meritorious service and its name is Yuli Township; Benevolent people live a long life, and benevolent people celebrate their day.

Stone eyes and stars, pool heart washing day; The study is an iron inkstone, outside the center. "The poem clearly shows that alternated to Chen Xian's character is very praise.

Therefore, the ancestral hall is also called "Baoyantang".

The "Qingtian" and "Washing the Sun" on the plaque in Qingyun Lane also came from here.

After liberation, "Baoyantang" was used as a school for a long time.

Experts pointed out that "Baoyantang" is a grand building, covering a vast area, with exquisite stone carving, wood carving and gray carving, which is of great historical research value.

Zhong Zhiping, deputy director of Panyu District Cultural Relics Management Office, said that Panyu Cultural Relics Investigation Department is going to declare this ancestral hall to Guangzhou Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
