Xinglin and Xingtan are only one word apart, but the difference between them can be said to be completely different. So what's the difference between the two?

Let me briefly mention that "Xinglin" is related to medicine and "Xingtan" is related to education. If we want to fully understand the differences between them, we must find out their origins.

The word "Xinglin" appeared in the Eastern Han Dynasty and was related to a man named Dong Feng. Dong Feng, a native of Houguan (now Fuzhou) in Fujian, was a famous doctor at that time. It doesn't matter if you haven't heard of him, then you must have heard of Zhang Zhongjing Hua Tuo. Dong Feng is as famous as these two people, and they are collectively called "Jian 'an Three Magical Doctors". His medical skill is superb, which can be described as a wonderful rejuvenation. It is said that he has the ability to bring back the dead. On one occasion, JIAOZHOU secretariat accidentally passed out for three days, and everyone thought he was dead. His family sent him to Dong Feng, who put a homemade pill in his mouth, poured some water in it and shook his head several times. After a while, the secretariat actually woke up. The history book says: "The color gradually recovers. You can sit up for half a day and talk for four days, and then you can return to normal. "Since then, Dong Feng's fame has greatly increased, and people who come to see him for medical advice are in an endless stream.

But Dong Feng has a very strange rule. He never charges any medical bills. See a patient. After the patient recovers, if he is a serious patient, five apricot trees can be planted near his clinic. If it's a mild patient, just plant one. Ten years have passed, and more patients have been seen. Naturally, more apricot trees have been planted, totaling 100,000. These 100,000 apricot trees have grown luxuriantly and become a forest. The scene is extremely spectacular, so it has become a local scene. When apricot trees grow up, they begin to bear fruit. Dong Feng sold apricots for food and gave them to poor local farmers and victims. This has helped more than 20,000 people a year.

After Dong Feng's death, people appreciated his kindness, so they raised funds to build an ancestral temple for him near Xinglin to worship him. Because Dong Feng is a philanthropist, he does not charge consulting fees, but only asks patients to plant an apricot tree. Thus, the word "Xinglin" became synonymous with doctors. For example, we often use "Xinglin" and "Xinglin" to describe a doctor who is virtuous and artistic.

So, what about the word "Xingtan"? What the hell does that mean? The word "Xingtan" comes from a fable in Zhuangzi. In Zhuangzi's fable, Confucius "teaches tirelessly", giving lectures everywhere, giving lectures to students under apricot trees everywhere, and sitting on the "apricot altar" when he is tired. Therefore, people call the place where Confucius gathered to give lectures "Xingtan". Later, people built altars, monuments and apricot trees in front of Dacheng Hall of Confucius Temple in Qufu. In Song Dynasty, descendants of Confucius were honored as "Duke of Feast" by the imperial court. Later, the descendants of Confucius built an altar in the place where Confucius gave lectures, surrounded by apricot trees.

Through these two historical stories, we probably know the origin of "Xinglin" and "Xingtan". Only by "knowing why" can we make mistakes and confuse them.
