The short story of mathematician Hua
Hua (1910.1.12-1985.6.12) is a native of Jintan District, Changzhou, Jiangsu, and his ancestral home is Danyang, Jiangsu. Mathematician, academician of China Academy of Sciences, foreign academician of American National Academy of Sciences, academician of Third World Academy of Sciences, academician of Bavarian Academy of Sciences of the Federal Republic of Germany. Member of the 1st-6th the NPC Standing Committee of China.

He is the founder and pioneer of China's analytic number theory, matrix geometry, canonical group, automorphism function theory and multivariate complex function theory, and is listed as one of the 88 great mathematicians in Chicago Science and Technology Museum. The international achievements in mathematical research include Fahrenheit theorem, Fahrenheit inequality and Hua Wang method.

Main honors: Hua's contribution to the development of mathematics in China is known as "the father of modern mathematics in China", "the god of mathematics in China" and "the people's mathematician".

This internationally renowned mathematician is listed as "one of the 88 great mathematicians in Chicago Science and Technology Museum today" along with several classic mathematicians in famous museums such as Smithsonian Museum and Chicago Science and Technology Museum.

1948 was elected as an academician of academia sinica. 1955 was elected as an academician of China Academy of Sciences. 1982 was elected as a foreign academician of the American Academy of Sciences. 1983 was elected as an academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences. 1985 was elected as an academician of Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Germany. He received honorary doctorates from Nancy University in France, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Illinois in the United States.

Since the founding of the People's Republic of China 60 years ago, he has been "one of 100 people who moved China".

Once, he was called to see a shop selling cotton. At this time, a woman went to buy cotton. Hua is solving a math problem. The woman asked, "How much does a bag of cotton cost?" However, diligent Hua didn't hear it, so she answered the calculated answer. The woman screamed, "Why is it so expensive?" At this time, Hua knew that someone was coming to buy cotton, so he said the price. The woman bought a bag of cotton and left. When Hua was about to sit down and continue to calculate, he found that the toilet paper that had just calculated the problem was taken away by the woman. China is anxious to catch up desperately. A rickshaw master saw it and asked him to drive after it. Later, Hua said shyly, "Aunt, please, please give me back the toilet paper." The woman said angrily, "This is the money I paid, not you." Hua was in a hurry and said, "How about this! I paid for it. " When Hua reached for money, the woman seemed to be moved by the child. Not only did she not want money, but she also returned the toilet paper to China. At this time, Hua Cai was relieved a little. When he got home, he calculated it again.

The famous mathematician Hua is not only willing to work hard, but also good at thinking. When I was fourteen years old, once, the math teacher Wang Weike gave the students such a question in class: "I don't know today's number, 3322, 5522, 7722." What is the geometry of things? " This question comes from Shu Jing, a grandson in ancient times, which means: There is one thing whose quantity is unknown. If you count in twos and threes, there will be two in the end; Five, five places, and finally there are three left; Count to seven, and there are two left. Ask how many of these things are there?

As soon as Teacher Wang finished reading the questions, Hua blurted out, "Twenty-three!"

"Why, have you read The Art of War?" Teacher Wang asked in surprise.

Hua replied, "I don't know the book Sun Tzu's Art of War, let alone read it."

"Then how did you work it out?" Teacher Wang asked again.

Hua methodically replied: "I think so, three three-place numbers, more than two, seven seven-place numbers, more than two, and the rest are all two." Then, the total may be three times seven plus two, which equals twenty-three. When twenty-three is divided by five, the remainder is exactly three. Therefore, 23 is the number sought. "

"Ah-"Miss Wang was stunned. "What a coincidence!"

1930 One day, Xiong Qinglai, head of the Department of Mathematics at Tsinghua University, was sitting in his office reading a magazine Science. Looking at it, I can't help but exclaim: "Which country is this China from?" Everyone around shook their heads. "Which university does he teach at?" People looked at each other. Finally, a Jiangsu-born teacher thought for a long time before slowly saying, "My brother has a classmate named Hua. Which university did he teach at? " ! He only went to junior high school and heard that he worked as a clerk in Jintan Middle School. "

Xiong qinglai was surprised. A person who graduated from junior high school must be a genius to write such a profound mathematical paper. He immediately decided to invite Hua to Tsinghua University. Since then, Hua has become a teaching assistant in the Department of Mathematics of Tsinghua University. Here, he is like a duck to water, swimming in the ocean of mathematics every day, leaving only five or six hours of sleep for himself.

It's hard to believe that flowers have developed the habit of reading books after turning off the lights. Of course, he has no special function, just a logical thinking activity in his mind. He took a book and put it under the lamp, looked at the topic and thought for a while, then turned off the lamp and lay in bed, closed his eyes and meditated, and began to do the problems in his mind. Turn over and get out of bed when you encounter difficulties, and open your books for a while. In this way, a book that took ten days and a half months to finish, he finished it in one night and two nights. Hua is regarded as a rare assistant.

The following year, his papers began to be published in famous foreign mathematical magazines. Tsinghua University broke the precedent and decided to promote Huawei teaching assistants with only junior high school education.

A few years later, Hua was sent to Cambridge University in England to study. However, he doesn't want to study for a doctorate, but only wants to be a visiting scholar. Because being a visiting scholar can break through the shackles and learn seven or eight subjects at the same time. He said, "I came to study in England, not to get a degree."

Hua didn't get a doctorate. During his two years in Cambridge, he wrote 20 papers. On the level, every article can get a doctorate. In one of the studies on "the problem in the tower", his theory was named "Fahrenheit theorem" by the mathematical community.

Hua devoted himself to his favorite mathematical research with the spirit of loving science, being diligent in research and not seeking fame and fortune. He abandoned the money, fame and position that the world sought. In the end, his career succeeded.

China closely combines scientific research with practical application. Hua applied mathematics to industrial and agricultural production and made outstanding contributions to China's modernization.

As we all know, Hua is a self-taught world-class mathematician. He only has a junior high school diploma. Because a paper was published in Science magazine, it was appreciated by mathematician Xiong Qinglai. From then on, North China went to Tsinghua and began his mathematics career.

65438-0936, recommended by Professor Xiong Qinglai, Hua went to Cambridge University in England to study. Hardy, a famous mathematician in the 20th century, has long heard that China is brilliant. He said, "You can get a doctorate in two years." But Hua said, "I don't want to get a doctorate." I just want to be a tourist. " "I came to Cambridge to study, not to get a degree." In the past two years, he has devoted himself to studying the theory of heap prime numbers, published 18 papers on the problems of Waring, altruism and Chigodbach, and obtained the famous "Fahrenheit Theorem", which showed the outstanding wisdom and ability of China mathematicians to the whole world.

From 65438 to 0946, Hua was invited to give lectures in the United States and was hired as a tenured professor by the University of Illinois. His family also settled in the United States, with a house and a car, and their life was very comfortable. At that time, many people thought that Hua would never come back.

The birth of the new China touched China's love for the motherland. 1950, he resolutely gave up his comfortable life in the United States and returned to the motherland. He also wrote a letter to China students studying in the United States, urging them to return to China to participate in socialist construction. In his letter, he confessed his love for China: "Friends! Although Liangyuan is good, it is not the hometown of longevity. Go back to Xi ... For the sake of the nation, we should go back ... "Although mathematics has no national boundaries, mathematicians have their own motherland.

Hua returned from overseas and was warmly welcomed by the party and people. He returned to Tsinghua campus, was appointed as the head of the Department of Mathematics, and was soon appointed as the director of the Institute of Mathematics of China Academy of Sciences. From then on, the real golden age of his mathematical research began. He has not only made remarkable achievements that have attracted worldwide attention, but also enthusiastically cared for and trained a large number of mathematical talents. He devoted a lot of efforts to the research, experiment and popularization of applied mathematics.

According to incomplete statistics, Hua * * * has published important mathematical papers 152, 9 mathematical works and1/mathematical popular science works for decades. He was also elected as a foreign academician of the Academy of Sciences and an academician of third world scientists.

From junior high school graduation to people's mathematician, Hua has gone through a tortuous and brilliant life path and won great honor for his motherland.

Hua's father is a small boss who runs a grocery store. Due to the bleak business and deteriorating family circumstances, Hua dropped out of school and became a bookkeeper in a grocery store. In the tedious and monotonous work, he did not give up his greatest hobby-mathematical research.

Just as he was trying to teach himself, disaster fell from the sky-he contracted terrible typhoid fever and was sentenced to death by the doctor. However, he miraculously survived, only his left leg was permanently disabled. It is this sentence that he often talks about: "The so-called genius depends on unremitting efforts."

With unremitting efforts and hard self-study, this mathematician without a junior college diploma touched the domestic mathematics circle with a paper "The reason why Su Jiaju's algebraic quintic equation can't be solved" in 1930. Later, he was recommended by Professor Xiong Qinglai to be a teaching assistant in the Department of Mathematics of Tsinghua University. Here, under the guidance of Xiong Qinglai and Yang Wuzhi, he made great progress academically and gradually established his position in the field of mathematics.

1948 was invited by an American university to teach. After the founding of New China, he resolutely gave up his excellent working and living conditions and returned to China with his wife and children. He became a professor in the Department of Mathematics of Tsinghua University and later served as the director of the Institute of Mathematics of China Academy of Sciences. He attached great importance to and advocated the application of mathematical theory to production practice, and personally organized and popularized "optimization method" and "overall planning method", which showed great power in socialist modernization.

He worked hard all his life and published more than 200 academic papers and monographs 10. As a mathematics educator, he trained a number of outstanding mathematicians such as Chen Jingrun, Wang Yuan and Lu Qikeng, and formed the China School of Mathematics, some of whom have become world-class mathematicians.

1985 June 2002 12, Hua died of a sudden myocardial infarction while giving lectures in Japan at the age of 75. With "the greatest hope is to work until the last moment of life", Hua, who inspires himself all his life, will always live in the hearts of the people.

China's persistence and spirit of self-improvement have achieved its own pursuit and achieved today's success. In summing up all his academic spirit, Hua said that learning must be practical and realistic, and we cannot learn with an open mind. Will pay a heavy price; A few more steps can't make up for it. If you can't get up, you will be completely discouraged. Son, you must study hard and try to be a learned person.
