Tsinghua University was founded in 19 1 1. 19 12 Tsinghua school was transformed into Tsinghua school, and a small-scale library was formally established, called Tsinghua school library.

1965438+In March 2009, the independent library building (east of the old library) was completed, with a construction area of 2 1 14 square meters. When it moved into the new building, it was renamed Tsinghua School Library.

1928 After the school was changed to the National Tsinghua University, the library funds increased sharply, the collection of books increased year by year, and the library was not enough. 1March, 1930, the expansion of the library (that is, the central and western parts of the old library) was started, and1June, 19931year was completed, and the library was completed. After the establishment of the university, the Library Committee was established as one of the standing committees of the university. Meanwhile, most colleges and departments have established their own libraries.

1June 1935 to1September 1936, Professor Zhu Ziqing, a famous writer, served as the chairman of the library committee and the acting director of the library. By the eve of the Anti-Japanese War, the collection of books and periodicals had been extremely rich, reaching more than 360,000 volumes. 1937 After the July 7th Incident, the school was forced to move south.

1938 In April, Tsinghua University, Peking University and Nankai University established the National Southwest Associated University in Kunming. Tsinghua Library delivered more than 23,000 books and periodicals to Kunming. During the arrival, more than 6,543,800 books temporarily stored in Beibei, Chongqing were bombed by the Japanese army, resulting in heavy losses, with only 3,000 books left.

After War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression's victory, Tsinghua University moved back to Beijing and Tsinghua campuses. 1946 When classes resumed, the library was beyond recognition. During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression period, the Japanese army used the library as a surgical ward, and the stacks as an operating room and a pharmacy. During this period, the collection lost175,000 copies. On the eve of liberation, the collection was only 465,438+0,000 volumes.

1948 12 15 With the liberation of Tsinghua University, the library has embarked on the road of healthy development again.

With the national education system reform of 1952, Tsinghua University has been transformed from a comprehensive university into an engineering university, and all the departments of arts, science and some engineering have been transferred to other institutions, and relevant books and materials have also been transferred. By 1958, more than180,000 books had been transferred to foreign schools. Fortunately, 300,000 rare books of ancient books and a number of precious cultural relics, such as Oracle Bone Inscriptions and bronzes, were preserved under the instruction of then principal Jiang Nanxiang. In order to meet the teaching and scientific research needs of Tsinghua University as a multidisciplinary engineering university after the adjustment of departments, the library has adjusted and reformed its collection structure, focusing on collecting engineering books. At the same time, actively collect Marxist-Leninist classics and progressive literary and artistic works. The collection of 1966 has grown to more than1350,000 volumes.

During the ten-year Cultural Revolution, the funds for books were greatly reduced, and many precious books and periodicals stopped buying, causing irreparable losses. Fortunately, due to the efforts of teachers, students, staff and library staff, the existing books have not suffered great losses.

From 65438 to 0978, after the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the education front brought order out of chaos and developed rapidly. Since the late 1970s, Tsinghua University has been adjusting its disciplines, gradually restoring departments such as science and liberal arts, and re-expanding into a comprehensive university. With the adjustment of the school's discipline layout and the continuous expansion of the scale, the types and quantities of library collections have also developed greatly, reaching 2.5 million volumes (pieces) in 1990.

After entering the 1990s, Tsinghua University Library has ushered in the best development opportunity in history. 199 1 In September, a new building donated by Mr. Run Shaofu of Hong Kong and funded by the State Education Commission was completed, and was later named Shaw Building. The new museum, designed by Academician Tsinghua University Guan, is integrated with the old one and won many national excellent architectural awards. After the completion of the new library, the total building area of the library will reach 27,820 square meters, with more than 2,800 reading seats. In the 1990s, great progress was made in the automation and networking of libraries. Gradually establish a relatively advanced and perfect information infrastructure. ILIS and INNOPAC library integrated management systems have been launched one after another; Through the network, the public inquiry of Chinese and foreign books and periodicals in the library is carried out, and the library's procurement, cataloging, periodical management and circulation are all carried out under the management of INNOPAC; A CD-ROM network query system has also been established to provide literature information retrieval services for all teachers and students through the campus network. Since 1998, while continuing to increase the printed collections, the library has made great efforts to develop electronic resources, forming a comprehensive collection system including natural science, engineering science literature, humanities, social science and management science literature, including Chinese and foreign books, periodicals, newspaper bound volumes, audio-visual products, computer literature and other types and carriers. By the end of 2003, the total collection of books has exceeded 3 million volumes, the second-level literature of abstract index has basically covered the existing disciplines of the school, and there are more than 25,000 academic full-text electronic journals in Chinese and foreign languages.

The library has 16 spacious and bright reading rooms and more than 2,000 reading seats. It is open 84 hours a week, providing a good reading and learning environment for teachers and students. As one of the three core switching nodes of the campus network, the library has a good network application environment. Ordinary reading rooms are equipped with a large number of network ports and computer terminals, and most public areas can access the Internet wirelessly. Here, readers can easily query the collection information and use various professional databases. The library provides 24-hour network information service, and teachers and students of the whole school can freely access various database resources at any client on the campus network or make an appointment to renew books by themselves. With the wide application of computers, information consulting services are becoming more and more active. The library has set up various information literacy education courses to provide various electronic resources and other types of training for teachers and students of the school. Implement the subject librarian system, keep close contact with various departments, and actively carry out service work according to the needs of teachers and students in teaching and scientific research. The establishment of information service center, to carry out subject novelty retrieval, paper consultation and inspection services. Teachers and students can also obtain information resources that are not available in our library from domestic and foreign libraries through interlibrary loan and document delivery services. Since 1999, the school has set up humanities, economics and management, law, architecture, fine arts and other branches. The collections of these branches have been connected with the comprehensive management system of the school library to provide services for readers on a unified platform. The library has also carried out some digital library research projects.

Following the pace of building a world-class university in Tsinghua University, Tsinghua University Library is moving towards the goal of building a research-oriented, digital, open and civilized modern library.
