Wuhan Institute of Technology was originally a Hubei Technical School founded in 1898.

On May 27th, 2000, with the approval of the State Council, the former Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan Jiaotong University of Science and Technology and Wuhan University of Automotive Technology merged to form the new Wuhan University of Technology.

This shows that Wuhan University of Technology was renamed Wuhan University of Technology not for no reason, but after merging with other schools. Of course, the merged Wuhan University of Technology is stronger than before.
