The land canal in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is the backbone project of the new land-sea passage in the west. On August 28, 2022, the Pinglu Canal officially started construction. The Pinglu Canal starts from the Pingtang River mouth of Xijin Reservoir Area in Hengzhou City, Nanning City, and flows into the Beibu Gulf along the Qinjiang River through Luwu Town, Lingshan District, Qinzhou City, with a total length of 134.2 km, of which the watershed crossing section is about 6.5 km, and the rest is built by existing rivers.
Pinglu Canal focuses on developing shipping, giving consideration to water supply, irrigation, flood control and improving water ecological environment. The canal starts from the Pingtang River mouth of Xijin Reservoir Area in Hengzhou City, Nanning City, and enters the Beibu Gulf along the Qinjiang River through Luwu Town, Lingshan District, Qinzhou City, with a total length of 134.2 km, of which the watershed crossing section is about 6.5 km, and the rest is built by using existing rivers. The project will be built according to the first-class inland waterway (5000-ton ship) standard, and reasonable development space will be reserved in the construction of navigation structure.
The role of Pinglu Canal:
1. After the Pinglu Canal is opened to traffic, it will directly open the shortest, most economical and most convenient sea passage between the inland, southwest and northwest of Guangxi, which can effectively solve the problem of smooth Xijiang waterway and greatly improve the transportation capacity of the new land and sea passage in the west. Promote the transformation of resource advantages along the new land and sea passage in the west into economic development advantages, optimize the strategic layout of regional development, promote the balanced and coordinated development of regional economy, and promote the formation of a new pattern of western development in the new era.
2. The Pinglu Canal will change the present situation that Guangxi faces the sea without rivers entering the sea, make Nanning, the provincial capital, a coastal city, form an urban agglomeration pattern of Nanning, Beihai, Qinzhou and Fangchenggang, promote the construction of an international gateway port in Beibu Gulf and promote the economic development to the sea.
3. After the Pinglu Canal is completed, a new channel for the main stream of Xijiang River to enter the sea will be opened in the shortest distance, which will directly connect the 5873 km inland waterway network in Guangxi and the waterway in some areas of Yunnan and Guizhou with ocean transportation, greatly releasing the shipping advantages and potential. In the long term, it can also be connected with the Gui Xiang Canal, which is being studied and demonstrated, and vertically connected with the Yangtze River, Pearl River and Beibu Gulf.
