At the end of the Sui Dynasty, Sun set foot in the officialdom and became a humble little official, who was promoted several times. At the end of Yang Di's life, he worked as a legal officer in Wannian County, Duyi (now Xi, Shaanxi Province), responsible for trying criminal prisons, supervising the arrest of traitors and investigating bribery. He was a powerful official in Wannian County.

In the fifth year of Wude in the Tang Dynasty (AD 622), he was the top scholar in the imperial examination and the first scholar in the history of China.
