The unique geographical configuration determines that Jiangsu must be an inclusive province in language and culture.
A closer look reveals an interesting feature. In the division of geographical features of Jiangsu Province, people usually like to cover the geographical composition of Jiangsu in three ways: southern Jiangsu, northern Jiangsu and central Jiangsu, which is different from many areas in China. For example, taking Henan as an example, the geographical division of Henan is generally divided into eastern Henan, southern Henan, western Henan and northern Henan. The reason for this division is that the geographical distribution of Henan is relatively uniform, not very long and narrow, nor very wide. On the other hand, Jiangsu Province is very different in this respect. Although the area of Jiangsu Province is small, the north-south span is great.
Although Jiangsu Province is actually a southern province from the north-south span, some cities in Jiangsu Province are actually very close to the north from the north-south span. On the one hand, this has influenced the language and culture of Jiangsu Province. For example, Fengxian, the northernmost county in Jiangsu Province, is located farther north than Taierzhuang in Shandong Province, so the dialects in this area are closer to the north. On the other hand, we look back at southern Jiangsu, which is closer to some cities in Zhejiang Province, so their dialects are more like the southern dialects we usually understand. Therefore, under the framework of different geographical levels, although the area of Jiangsu Province is small, it contains three mainstream dialects.
In our overall impression, we think that the main ethnic composition of China is that the north is made up of Han nationality, while most ethnic minorities live in the south. Although people have such an overall concept, historically, in the process of historical changes, there have been many exchanges and integrations between ethnic minorities and Han nationality. In fact, there are quite a few cases about mass migration in history. For example, during the Southern Song Dynasty, a large number of northerners chose to move south. It can be said that the population composition of most cities in the south is mixed in the north.
