The Origin of Water Margin
The Water Margin came into being in the Ming Dynasty. It is based on the stories, scripts and operas about the Water Margin since the Song and Yuan Dynasties, and is processed and created by the author. This book is based on the story of Sung River Uprising. The book describes the Liangshan hero's resistance to oppression, the growth of Liangshan in Shui Bo, his surrender to the imperial court, and the process in which various political forces opposed to the Song government were suppressed after surrendering to the imperial court.

This grand story with a tragic ending artistically reflects the whole process of the Sung River Uprising from its occurrence, development to failure in China history, profoundly reveals the social roots of the uprising, enthusiastically praises the uprising heroes' resistance struggle and social ideals, and specifically reveals the internal historical reasons for the failure of the uprising.

The Water Margin is one of the earliest Zhang Hui vernacular novels in the history of China, which is widely circulated and well known. At the same time, it is also one of the works with epic characteristics in China literature, which has a far-reaching impact on narrative literature in China and even East Asia. ?

Extended data:

In history, there are only thirty-six prototypes of "one hundred and eight generals"

"The Water Margin" shaped Liang Shanbo's "hundreds of single and eight generals", each with a vivid image and vivid story. However, compared with the history books, there are only 36 characters in history, and the remaining 72 are mostly fabrications, which are purely false.

According to historians' research, during the reign of Xuanhe in Song Huizong, there was indeed an uprising by Song Jiang and Liang Shanbo, which was a historical event in which 36 people, including Song Jiang, ran amok in Huainan, but there were not as many 108 generals as described in Water Margin, and there were not so many vivid and dramatic scenes. These 36 people have no objective and specific records in the official history books, and most of them are re-processed according to folklore.

Liangshan Lake, located in the west of Shandong Province, was originally a small lake, but it merged with many small lakes around it due to the repeated flooding of the Yellow River from the Five Dynasties to the Northern Song Dynasty. By the end of the Northern Song Dynasty, a 800-mile lake was formed, with criss-crossing ports, reeds and many natural islands. The situation is both dangerous and complicated.

At that time, many bankrupt farmers, fishermen and some fugitives wanted by the government hid here, ganged up in groups and made a living by doing some "illegal" activities. There are a growing number of forces, and the number of people gathered is increasing. By the end of the Northern Song Dynasty, there were many armed struggles and peasant uprisings against government corruption, exploitation and oppression, and Sung River Rebels were one of them.

What is the scale of the Sung River Uprising? According to Biography of Hou Meng, History of Song Dynasty, and Records of Xuanhe, there are only 36 people. According to Lang Ying's seven revisions of the manuscript, these 36 people are: Song Jiang, Chao Gai, Wu Yong, Lu Junyi, Guan Sheng, Shi Jin, Chai Jin, Ruan Xiaoer, Ruan Xiaowu, Ruan Xiaoqi, Liu Tang, Zhang Qing, Yan Qing, Sun Li, Zhang Shun, Zhang Heng, Hu Yanchuo, Li Jun, Hua Rong, Qin Ming, Li Kui, Lei Heng and Li Shun.
