Fengguo Temple in Yixian County, Jinzhou City, Liaoning Province.
Although many people remember Yixian as a small county, when you really come here, you will be surprised to find that this temple of the Liao Dynasty witnessed the glory of the two empires, and it is also the largest existing temple building of the Liao Dynasty in China.
Fengguo Temple was founded in the ninth year of Kaitai in Liao Dynasty (1020), that is, this year ushered in the history of 1000 years. It is also a royal temple built by Emperor Longxu of Lu Ye, Emperor Sheng Zong of Liao Dynasty, in the "family fief" of his mother Xiao Taihou. Today, it has the largest Buddhist temple in ancient China and the oldest and largest clay sculpture group portrait, which has been included in the first batch of national key cultural protection units.
I bought a ticket and briefly looked at the whole building of Fengguo Temple. Today's Fengguo Temple is a temple with a strong style of Han Buddhism. From south to north, the central axis is mainly divided into outer mountain gate, inner mountain gate, archway, Tianwang Hall and Daxiong Hall. On both sides of the Ursa Major Hall, there are the Temple of Wealth, the Temple of Bodhisattva and the Three Temples.
This is the outer mountain gate, but there is only a little foundation of Liao dynasty left, from which you can see the Buddha hall on the whole central axis. This is the inner mountain gate, the first building after entering the central axis. It is said to be a relic of the Qing Dynasty, but the gold-plated antique murals inside look beautiful.
After crossing the inner mountain gate, you can see a wooden archway on the top of Xieshan Mountain in Qing Dynasty, which is said to have been erected by princess royal, the daughter of Huang Taiji in Qing Dynasty.
Walking under the Mupai building, you can reach the King's Temple, a Qing Dynasty building. It is a temple with three rooms wide and two rooms deep, which is located on the top of the mountain and has only one roof. There are not many features in the building, and the words in it are just so-so. Modern murals are painted on the four walls.
Perhaps it is precisely because these buildings in front look very pocket-sized, so when I came back from Tianwangtang, I suddenly saw the Hall of Heroes. Layout and momentum are the biggest buildings I have ever seen.
The main hall of Fengguo Temple is a building with a width of nine rooms, a length of 48.2 meters, a depth of five rooms and a width of 25.438+03.
Meters, up to 2 1 meter, with five ridges and one eaves, is the largest single-story wooden structure in existing buildings in China, also known as "the largest hall of heroes in China".
Of course, Fengguo Temple is famous in the world, not only because of its huge architecture, but also because of its seven giant buddhas. These are seven statues preserved so far in the Liao Dynasty, namely, the corpse Buddha of Pipo, the corpse Buddha, the floating Buddha of Pishe, the stranded Buddha of Sun, the stranded Buddha of Monahan, the Kaye Buddha and the Buddha of Sakyamuni.
In the middle is Vipo's corpse Buddha, and in the west is Sakyamuni's Buddha. It can be seen that this Sakyamuni Buddha is different from other giant buddhas in posture, with his face facing west and his hands slightly spread out to the west, as if guiding something.
In fact, in our impression, Sakyamuni Buddha is in the middle, but the Sakyamuni Buddha in the main hall of Fengguo Temple is in the westernmost part, which can be described as an isolated case in Buddhist temples.
Although these Liao dynasty statues look dusty, you can still see that the face and skin of the Buddha statue are still in a golden state, especially when the light is good.
In front of each giant Buddha, there are two bodhisattvas, one on the left and one on the right, facing each other. These bodhisattvas have exquisite faces and different costumes, which shows that they are also works of Liao Dynasty.
It's just that many bodhisattvas' arms and instruments have been destroyed, and now they are either incomplete or newly repaired in the later period, which looks a bit nondescript.
At both ends of the altar, there is also a statue of the heavenly king, which is 3.5 meters high. Under the altar, you can see the god beast and the shoulder-backed lux, which also presents a strong architectural style of Liao Dynasty.
Bypassing the stone tablets on the east and west sides, you can see many murals preserved in the Yuan Dynasty. Although some of them are still pale, if you look carefully, you can still see the charm of Yuan Dynasty murals.
Fengguo Temple is full of treasures. On the back of Daxiong Hall is a statue of Guanyin, a male figure sitting upside down in the Ming Dynasty. On both sides, you can also see the wooden carvings of the eighteen arhats in the Ming Dynasty. There are many Liang Cai paintings and Dou Cai paintings in the whole hall. You can see them when you look up.
It can be said that the buildings preserved in the Liao Dynasty are rare. The Liao Dynasty Hall, the largest Buddhist temple in China, is really lucky to survive the natural and man-made disasters such as the destruction of gold in the Yuan Dynasty and the Liaoshen Campaign.
