Zongyang County has a unique geographical position, located in the southwest of Anhui Province, on the north bank of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and at the southern foot of Dabie Mountain. It is connected to the suburbs of Tongling City in the east, Tongcheng City in the west, Lujiang County in the north and Guichi City in the south. Zongyang County has superior geographical environment, warm and humid climate, four distinct seasons, abundant rainfall and sunshine.
The history of Zongyang County can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Period, when it belonged to the State of Chu. After the Qin Dynasty unified China, the county system was implemented, and Zongyang County was subordinate to Lujiang County. During the Han Dynasty, Zongyang County was subordinate to Lujiang County. During the Three Kingdoms period, Zongyang County belonged to Wu and Wei successively. In the eighteenth year of Emperor Kai of Sui Dynasty (598), Zongyang County was established. In the Tang Dynasty, Zongyang County successively belonged to Luzhou, Zhoushu and Tongan County. In Song Dynasty, Zongyang County was subordinate to Zhou Shude 'an County.
In the Yuan Dynasty, Zongyang County belonged to Luzhou Road. In the Ming Dynasty, Zongyang County was subordinate to Luzhou Prefecture. In the Qing Dynasty, Zongyang County was subordinate to Luzhou Prefecture. During the Republic of China, Zongyang County successively belonged to Anqing Road, the First Administrative Supervision Area of Anhui Province and Anqing Special Zone. On April 2,1,1949, Zongyang County People's Government was established, which belongs to Chizhou District of Northern Anhui Administrative Office.
