The origin of Piaocheng is recorded in the third volume of Yancheng County Records compiled during the Qianlong period. In the map of Yancheng City in the 21st year of Guangxu (1895), the figure of the city is like a gourd ladle, so Yancheng is also called "gourd ladle city", which is named because of its shape, so that the gourd ladle floats in the water and never sinks. According to the Records of Yancheng County during the Qianlong period, Yancheng was offshore, but the terrain was high and it was not easy to be flooded. Besides, the city is shaped like a gourd ladle, so it is called "gourd ladle city".
According to Mr. Zhou Mengzhuang's textual research on the origin of Du Yan and Yancheng, "Before the Zhou and Qin Dynasties, the place names of Yancheng could not be tested. In the Western Han Dynasty (BC 1 19), it was named Du Yan because it cooked salt pavilions and transported salt rivers.
Salt is ditching to cook salt, and Tinghu is also drawing seawater to cook salt, which is called salt production and is famous for its salt. In ancient Yancheng, salt was cooked in pavilions, and the tax was 30%. Today's Tinghu Lake is prosperous and rich. Therefore, "Tinghu", "Du Yan" and "Du Yan" are not only symbols of Yancheng's sea salt culture, but also bear the humanistic heritage of history.
