Hangzhou No.4 Middle School or Hangzhou No.2 Middle School has a long history.
Hangzhou No.4 Middle School, formerly known as Zheng Yang Bookstore, was founded in 1899. It is the earliest modern public middle school in Zhejiang Province and one of the first three provincial key middle schools in Hang Cheng. Cultural celebrities such as Ma Xulun, Xu Zhimo, Yu Dafu, Hua and Liu Ji, and more than ten academicians of the two academies such as Ding Shunnian, Cheng, Du Qinghua and Jian have taught or studied here. In 2004, it moved from the northern foot of Wu Shan, near the Xizi Lake, to the Xiasha East District on the Qiantang River. At present, it is a first-class key middle school in Zhejiang Province, a civilized unit in Zhejiang Province, the largest public boarding high school in Hang Cheng, Hangzhou People's Satisfaction School, the only national advanced school for moral education in Hangzhou, and the only "national defense student base of Chinese People's Armed Police Force" in Hang Cheng. Hangzhou No.2 Middle School, a famous school in the south of the Yangtze River, founded the earliest modern middle school for Hangzhou, a famous historical and cultural city. Its predecessor was private Whelan Middle School and National Zhejiang University Affiliated Middle School. Huilan Middle School was founded one year after the Reform Movement of 1898 (1899), when people with lofty ideals promoted modernization with blood. The founder is W.S. Sweet, a missionary of American Christian North Baptist Church. The Middle School Attached to Zhejiang University was founded by Professor Zhu Kezhen, a famous scientist and educator, after the July 7th Incident (1940).
