Chongming Island is located at the center of the Yangtze River estuary and the eastern coast of China, at the intersection of the Yangtze River Golden Waterway and the Shanghai-centered Gold Coast, connecting the Yangtze River coast 18 provinces and cities with the Pacific Ocean outside. There are more than 40 kilometers of deep-water coastline along the southern edge of the island, which has good conditions for port construction.

Chongming Island is also the largest sand island in the world. Chongming Island is long and narrow, shaped like a spring silkworm. It borders the vast East China Sea in the east, the Yangtze River in the west, Qidong and Haimen in the north and Shanghai in the south. It belongs to the alluvial plain of the Yangtze River. Chongming County is located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, bordering the East China Sea in the east, facing Pudong New Area, Baoshan District and Taicang City in Jiangsu Province in the south, and separated from Haimen City and Qidong City in Jiangsu Province in the north by water.
