Introduction to Meiling Mountain Where is Meiling Mountain?
1. Where is Meiling?

According to the unearthed cultural relics, our ancestors left footprints on this mountain as early as 4000 years ago. During the Spring and Autumn Period, Gou Jian, King of Yue, once called Putuo Mountain and its nearby island Yongdong, Qin An Qisheng and Ge Hong of Jin Dynasty all came to this mountain to collect medicine and practice medicine.

According to legend, Mei Fu, a great scholar in Han Dynasty, lived here in seclusion, so Putuo Mountain was originally named Meiling Mountain. Buddhism prevailed in the Tang Dynasty. In the middle of the ninth century, monks from Tianzhu (now India) came to this mountain. They are named Bubiloka (meaning beautiful little white flowers).

In the 12th year of the Tang Dynasty (858), Hui Kai, a Japanese monk, returned from the Five Guanyin Statues, passed through the Putuo Ocean, and was blocked by the strong wind and came to Putuo.

In the third year of Yuanfeng in Song Shenzong (1080), a temple was officially built on Mount Putuo, named Baotuo Kannonji.

In the first year of Shaoxing, Song Gaozong (1 13 1), the court drove away all the fishermen on the island and turned it into a pure land of Buddhism. In the seventh year of Jiading, Song Ningzong (12 14), Putuo Mountain was designated as a concentrated place to worship Guanyin, and all temples in the mountain built Guanyin statues, so Guanyin and Putuo Mountain formed an indissoluble bond.

Someone in Hua Yan Jing said: There is a mountain in the south called Bubaloka, and there are bodhisattvas. His name is Ziyou, so he belongs to Guanyin Bodhisattva Dojo and becomes one of the four famous mountains in Buddhism. Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties all gave gold and silver to repair and expand Mount Putuo.

During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, Dutch colonists took Mount Putuo and razed the temple to the ground. Later, Emperor Kangxi allocated funds for restoration twice. By the middle of Qing Dynasty, there were three major temples, 88 temples (medium-sized Buddhist temples) and 128 huts (small temples).

Most of them are built in the southeast of the island. At that time, incense was flourishing on the mountain, with more than 3,000 monks. Mount Putuo has become a famous Buddhist resort at home and abroad. Buddhists from all over China, Japan and Southeast Asia came here to pay homage to the Buddhist countries in Haiti.

Until 1945 after the end of the Anti-Japanese War, there were more than 80 temples and security halls in Putuo Mountain. This so-called Buddhist holy land is very famous overseas, especially among the Buddhist circles in Southeast Asia and overseas Chinese.

After liberation, the country renovated the main temples and scenic spots many times, and domestic and foreign tourists flocked all year round. Mount Putuo is now being restored, and more than 20 scenic spots, including three major temples and four major temples, are open to the public.
