The history of Suzhou Tiger Hill
tiger hill tower

Also known as Yunyan Temple Pagoda, it was built in the 9th year of Renshou of Emperor Wendi of Sui Dynasty (60 1). It was originally built as a wooden tower, but it was later destroyed. The existing Tiger Hill was built from the eighth year of Ganyou in the last week to the second year of Song Jianlong (959-96 1). This tower is a plane octagon with seven floors. The original tower top was destroyed by lightning.

When 1956 was rebuilt, a large number of precious cultural relics such as stone letters, prayer flags, bronze buddhas, bronze mirrors and celadon lotus bowls of Yue Yao were found in the third mezzanine.

Tiger Hill is now 47.5 meters high. The tower is made of bricks and weighs more than 6,000 tons. According to records, due to the foundation reasons, Tiger Hill has been tilted to the northwest since the Ming Dynasty (1368- 1644), with the center of the tower top 2.3 meters away from the center of the ground floor and the inclination of 2 "40', which is called" the leaning tower of Pisa in the East ".

1956, Suzhou municipal government invited experts of ancient architecture to reinforce and repair the Muta by using the method of iron hoop grouting, and finally saved it. 196 1 is listed as one of the national key cultural relics protection units.

Building structure

Tiger Hill is a pavilion-like brick-wood structure. The tower is 47.7 meters high and its body is made of bricks, weighing more than 6,000 tons. The tower is an octagonal plane with a door on each side, which has seven floors. It is supported by 8 external piers and 4 internal piers. The eaves are wood-like arches with raised cornices. There are two layers of tower walls in the tower, just like a small tower covered with a big tower, and the connection between layers is connected by stacked brick masonry.

The plane of tiger hill is octagonal, consisting of outer pier, cloister, inner pier and tower room. There is a cross passage between the inner pier and the cloister, and there are eight pot doors between the outer pier and the flat seat (that is, the outer cloister). The design fully embodies the architectural style of Tang and Song Dynasties.

Tiger Hill began to tilt to the northwest in the Ming Dynasty because of uneven soil thickness in the tower foundation and imperfect design structure of tower pier foundation. According to experts' measurement, the spire is 2.34 meters, and the maximum inclination of the tower is 3 degrees and 59 minutes. The Leaning Tower of Tiger Hill is also called "Leaning Tower of Pisa in China".
