Heping District was mainly composed of the concessions of three countries: Tianjin British Concession, Tianjin French Concession and Tianjin Japanese Concession.
Victoria Road is the main street of the British Concession in Tianjin and the main gathering area of financial institutions. 1949 was renamed Jiefang Road. Now Tianjin Municipal Government is located in the former site of Gordon Hall, the former British Concession Industry Bureau on Jiefang Road.
The French Concession in Tianjin has the most prosperous business district of Quanyechang in Tianjin, and the main streets are "Fuxu Jiangjun Road" and "Gechanchang Road". 1946 was renamed as binjiang road. At the end of General Fuxi Road is Kathy Church, the largest Catholic church in Tianjin.
The Japanese concession in Tianjin is in the northernmost part, and the main street is called "Xu Street". After Japan surrendered, it was renamed "Roosevelt Road" (according to the name of the President of the United States), and 1953 was renamed Heping Road, hence the name Heping District. The starting point of Heping Road is Zhongyuan Company (now a department store and the tallest building in Tianjin before 1980s) established by China National Capital 1928.
After the reform and opening up in Tianjin, many new buildings have sprung up like mushrooms after rain, but Heping District is located in the center and there is no room for expansion. Many buildings have historical value and need to be protected. On the contrary, the appearance of Heping District is not as good as the surrounding new district.
