1In August, 1994, BMW launched the third generation 7 Series with the factory code E38.
The third generation 7 Series, code-named E38, first introduced four models, namely 730i, 740i, 750i and 750iL. Most models use a 5-speed automatic gearbox, and the extended wheelbase version is longer than the ordinary version 140mm.
At the time of 1996, BMW introduced the engine number M5 [comment? Pictures? Forum ]2' s inline six-cylinder models 728i and 728iL, followed by the brand-new M6[ comment? Pictures? The 735i and 735iL of the Forum ]2 engine also replaced the 730i and 740i.

In the third generation 7 Series, the power unit of BMW has undergone great changes. 1996 eliminated M30 in-line 6-cylinder engine which had been working for the first two generations of 7 series, and began to apply the new in-line 6-cylinder engine code-named M52 on 728i and 728iL.
Subsequently, 740i and 740iLi equipped with the more advanced M62TU V8 engine also replaced 735i and 735iL, and the DSC dynamic stability system was added to the configuration list of 7 series.
During the period of 1997 ~ 1999, BMW also launched diesel versions of 7-series models with displacement of 3.0 liters and 4.0 liters for the European market.
