Origin of Yuanling Dragon Boat
Yuanling Dragon Boat originated in ancient times, and the object of sacrifice was Pan Hu, the ancestor of all ethnic groups in Wuxi. In the song of Shen, which has been circulated for thousands of years, the Miao people in Yuanling sang: "People race dragon boats to sacrifice Qu Yuan, and I row dragon boats to sacrifice Pan Hu." It can be seen that the Yuanling Dragon Boat Race is earlier than the dragon boat race dedicated to Qu Yuan, which may be the main birthplace of the traditional dragon boat race in China.

Tiger Pan was a figure in the Di Ku era. Legend has it that he is Di Ku's pet dog. He married Princess Xin's daughter because of his military exploits, settled in Banxi Cave in Yuanling, and gave birth to six children and six daughters. Children intermarry and breed into six ethnic groups: Miao, Yao, Dong, Tu, She and Li. After Pan Hu's death, six tribes invited God to bring him back to life. Because of the dense mountains and rivers in Yuanling, the wizard didn't know where his soul had fallen, so he asked all ethnic groups to build dragon boats and look for shouts by stream and river, which eventually evolved into a witch festival in Jingchu.

Apart from the absurd elements of this legendary marriage between man and dog, the rest should be real history. Pan Hu's marriage with his daughter is actually the earliest imperial rule stage and the in-laws phenomenon of ethnic minorities in China. Their marriage annihilated the hatred between the Di Ku imperial court and Wuxi border people, and basically ended the continuous war of recruiting troops in the imperial court since the Yellow Emperor. This can be verified from Sima Qian's Historical Records. Before Di Ku's "Three Miao" was recorded in Historical Records, the number of similar records has obviously decreased since Di Ku, which fully shows that the marriage between Pan Hu and Xin Nv eased the staged contradictions and promoted the stability of the country.

Between the lines of historical documents, we can clearly understand the context of an ancient history. Di Ku's national strength is empty, because it recruits all the year round. At this time, the dog Rong tribe rising in the north took the opportunity to invade the Central Plains, which directly threatened the Di Ku regime. In order to encourage soldiers to bravely kill the enemy and beat back the dog army, a decree was promulgated, but whoever captures and kills the head of Wu, the general of the dog army, regardless of military and civilian officers and soldiers, must marry the little princess as his wife. At the time of national crisis, Pan Huyi, a young leader of Wuxi ethnic minorities, abandoned his personal grievances and led his army into the battle to defend the country. Under the fierce attack of Pan Hujun, the remnant army was in flight. General Wu also died, and Tiger Pan cut off his head and gave it to him.

Tiger Pan's mind and courage moved Di Ku very much. When Princess Xin married him, she also signed a covenant with him that the court would exempt Wuxi corvee and make peace with Wuxi ethnic minorities forever. This is the legendary so-called immune iron ticket. As for Tiger Pan, who was later called a pet dog, it was the feudal rulers' discrimination and slander against Wuxi's ethnic minorities and the need to serve the ruling class politics.

Pan Hu was originally the imperial court of Di Ku after Chiyou and Huangdi. Water and fire are incompatible. After marrying Di Ku, the families of China and li miao realized the real fusion of blood and milk. Xin Nv brought the culture and civilization of the Central Plains, and the people of Wuxi ended their perennial campaigns, got a rest and entered a new life. Therefore, Pan Hu and Xin Nv are honored as ancestors by people of all ethnic groups in Wuxi. No wonder thousands of years after their death, people are still remembering them in various ways. Legend has it that Pan Hu and Xin Nv were buried near Yuanling Yaotou after their death. In the past, there was a Pan Hu Temple by the river. Every year, after the dragon boat is launched, the first thing to do is to come to Pan Hu Temple to burn incense to worship the ancestors, and then swim in the river to evoke spirits. The scale of Pan Hu Temple was very grand in the early days. During the reign of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty, the famous poet Cha wrote a poem "Send Shawan Boat" over Yuanling, in which "the city is still strong in Pan Hu", that is to say, he saw the situation of Pan Hu Temple in Yuanling County from a distance. We can imagine the scale pattern of Panhu Temple at that time.
