Hongan County is located in the northeast of Hubei Province, at the southern foot of Dabie Mountain, at the junction of Hubei and Henan provinces. It is adjacent to Macheng in the east, huangpi district and Dawu County in the west, Xinzhou District in the south and Xinxian County in Henan Province in the north. With a total area of 1793 square kilometers, it governs 10 towns and 1 township.
Hongan was originally named Huang An. In the forty-second year of Jiajing in Ming Dynasty (1563), Hong 'an was officially established as a county. Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi, founders of Neo-Confucianism, philosophers in the Northern Song Dynasty, thinkers in the Ming Dynasty, translators, writers, historians and economists in modern times, Zhang and many other famous ministers and bachelors. Hong 'an has won the honorary titles of many counties in China, such as the national demonstration county for comprehensive development of mountainous areas, the national top 100 oil-producing counties and the national advanced county for comprehensive management of social security.

There are many cultural relics in Hong 'an, and there are 96 key cultural relics protection units, including Qiliping Revolutionary Site Group (20 key protection units), Jute Uprising and Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery in Hubei, Henan and Anhui Soviet Areas. There are 3 provincial key protection units: the former residence of Comrade Dong, the county Soviet government and the Twin Towers; There are 72 key protection units at the county level.
It has been named as "revolutionary traditional education base", "national defense education base" and "youth revolutionary traditional education base" by Hubei Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, Ministry of National Defense and Central Committee of the Communist Youth League. Nearly 100 units in the province have set up traditional education bases in Hong 'an, and more than 500,000 people come to Hong 'an every year to receive revolutionary traditional education and sightseeing.
