How to evaluate The Romance of Death? Why does this play express the whole life of old Shanghai?
The Lost Romance is a film with a unique narrative style. The reason why this drama shows all the sentient beings in old Shanghai is that it is interpreted as the background of 1937 on the eve of the great turmoil in Shanghai.

The expression of the film "Romance of Death" is quite experimental, and even goes further than art films in some aspects. The whole film has a rare elegance and attitude, and perhaps the attitude itself is the value of the film.

The film's lens language is stylized and exquisite, mixing Wong Kar-wai's romantic light and shadow with Quentin's violent aesthetics. Composition is often symmetrical, and occasionally, from the perspective of God, a picture with a sense of the times is painted with a look-up lens, and the details are full of symbols and metaphors.

All-around help Mr. Lu (Ge You) promised Xiaoliu (Zhang Ziyi), a social butterfly who was unwilling to be lonely, to play the heroine in the film, but Xiaoliu hooked up with the hero and was asked to leave Shanghai. On the way, Lu Chuan's brother-in-law Watanabe (Tadanobu Asano) takes Xiaoliu home and imprisons her as a sex slave.

The housekeeper Wang Ma () introduced the unsmiling coachman (Du Chun) to Mr. Lu as a personal bodyguard. On the eve of the Battle of Songhu, the Japanese planned to kill Mr. Lu. As a spy, Watanabe agreed to kill Mr. Lu and all his family members were killed. Mr. Lu entrusted the old five and the coachman to kill the second gangster brother who took refuge in the Japanese.

On the eve of the end of the Anti-Japanese War, Mr. Lu found the imprisoned Xiao Liu and went to Luzon Island with her. Pretending to be a senior Kuomintang general, the driver killed Dai Watanabe's son face to face, and Xiao Liu shot and killed Watanabe at the same time. 1949, Mr. Lu went to Hong Kong alone and disappeared from the scene.
