Content introduction:

Social media is not new. From papyrus letters used by Cicero and other Roman politicians to pamphlets printed during the Reformation, American independence and the French Revolution, the way people exchange information with their peers still affects modern society. After newspapers, radio and television dominated information dissemination for decades, the emergence of the Internet made social media a powerful tool for people to share information with friends, and pushed public discussion to a new mode.

Tom? In his book, Standich reminds us that social networks in history have many similarities with social media in modern society. For example, the plight of the Catholic church in responding to Martin Luther's attack is very similar to the situation in which large enterprises respond to criticism on the Internet today. In the17th century, people accused cafes of distracting people from their work and study, just as they are worried about the negative effects of social media today. With the help of discussions with Thomas Paine and Vinton Cerf, the "father of the Internet", the author also discussed some controversial topics: from the tension between freedom of speech and censorship to the role of social media in stimulating innovation and social change.

The brief history series of polis also includes: a brief history of mankind, a brief history of the world, a brief history of life, a brief history of medicine, a brief history of philosophy of time, a brief history of Nazi Germany, an eye for an eye: a brief history of crime and punishment, a brief history of marriage and a brief history of privacy.
