The school was formerly known as Hunan Province Yizhang Normal School founded in 1960. In 1987, the school moved to Tangdong New District, Zixing City and was renamed Hunan Province Dongjiang Normal School. In August 2008, it was approved by the Chenzhou Municipal People’s Government. Approved, Hunan Province Dongjiang Normal School and Chenzhou Preschool Normal School merged to form Chenzhou Normal School.

In 2010, Chenzhou Art School merged into Chenzhou Normal School. In May 2014, with the approval of the Hunan Provincial People's Government and the filing with the National Ministry of Education, the school was upgraded to the Xiangnan Preschool Teachers College. As of July 2019, the school covers an area of ??more than 330 acres, with a construction area of ??150,000 square meters; it has 4 colleges and 10 majors; there are more than 7,000 full-time students and 407 faculty and staff.
