The Yugoslav movie "The Bridge" tells the story of a group of guerrillas who blew up a beautiful bridge under extremely dangerous and difficult conditions during World War II and successfully blocked the German army's retreat. Although China and Yugoslavia are far apart, they are miraculously connected. The film's influence in China far exceeds its achievements in other countries, and the Italian episode "Ah!" "Goodbye, Friend" became one of the most popular songs in the 1970s after it was paired with Chinese lyrics.
The movie is easy to understand. Although the plot is confusing and even very tense at one point, it does not transcend the realm of heroism. The tiger played by Bata is the core of this group of heroes. His composure enables him to overcome life and death tests and finally complete the mission. But the film is by no means praising one person, but a team. This team was spontaneously formed by the people of Yugoslavia who fought against the invasion. They come from a wide range of sources, but they come together for the same goal. What is important is that they become " friend".
Friends are perfectly interpreted in the movie. The friendship between Tiger and Salvadoni comes from the deep friendship formed by fighting side by side and trusting each other in the past. The friendship between Salvadoni and Bambino was established through the latter's wholehearted service and respect for the former, and became the most touching part of the film. Mannai and Dixi once fought together, but there was some suspicion between them. The reconciliation between Mannai and Dixi before his death made the audience sigh with regret, lamenting that the friendship was only a short-lived moment. In the film, "friend" is an affectionate term for the revolutionary comrades. While touching the audience, it also moved the people in the play. The engineer in the film has always been proud of the fact that he built such a beautiful bridge. He was a little aloof and his contempt for national interests seemed unkind, but he still blew up the bridge with his own hands and fixed his life at the moment of the explosion. What moved him to make such an unusual but correct decision? The answer is again "friends". Salvadoni blew up Bambino with his own hands so that the latter would not be captured by the enemy, just like the engineer who blew up his own bridge to win the victory of his nation. The song sang "Goodbye, friends, goodbye, goodbye." In the end, only four people were left in the seven-person team. All the friends had gone away, and all that was left was the lingering sound of the empty valley accompanying the broken bridge.
Facing the German fascist aggression, the people of Yugoslavia suffered huge losses, and 10% of the population died in World War II. However, the various ethnic groups in this region who spoke multiple languages ??showed unprecedented cohesion and established a united country after the war. In the movie, the Yugoslav guerrillas who fought against the Germans were not simply Serbs, but Yugoslavs in a broad sense. In this film, they were prominently represented as Croats, and even Italians were important members of this guerrilla group. Internationalism exists in a form that transcends nationality, while fascism is the enemy of Yugoslavia and the enemy of world peace. Chinese audiences watched the Yugoslav guerrillas go through life and death, were resourceful, brave and capable, and naturally recalled the nuisance tactics our guerrillas used against the Japanese invaders during World War II. This empathy is the main reason why this film has gained strong recognition in China .
After watching the special feature produced by "Film Legend" for this film, I have a deeper understanding of "The Bridge". The actors in this film have little contact now, because they now belong to different countries and represent different political parties or interest groups. The name "Yugoslavia" is already a thing of the past. Yugoslavia once had a strong dictatorial president named Tito. During his time in power, Yugoslavia was a united country. However, as a Croat, Tito adopted policies that reduced the people's identification with "Serbs" and the country's cohesion. After his death, less than 30 years later, Yugoslavia had been completely separated into seven independent countries (Slovenia, Croatia , Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo). Today's "Yugoslavia" has become a part of the memory. The united people who were originally united under the name of this country have changed from being friendly to being unfamiliar and even full of hostility.
The powerful countries that were originally at the core of the Cold War but believed in the Non-Aligned Movement now exist as seven small countries. Not only do the United States and Russia issue orders to them on their shoulders, but the surrounding Albania, Turkey, and Greece also have their own plans. .
Listening to the song "Goodbye, friend", looking at Yugoslavia today, and thinking about the severe ethnic pressure in western China, how can we feel at ease?
(Hope this helps you!)
