In 2004, at the age of 13, he participated in the 5th Asian Chopin International Piano Competition held in Japan. His complete set of Chopin etudes OP25 and Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1 were highly praised by Yasinski, chairman of the jury of the 14th Chopin International Piano Competition, and called him: a true genius! In August 2004, at the 49th Polish International Chopin Music Festival (the most famous music festival in the world), which gathered many of the most famous pianists in the world today, he performed Chopin Etudes 0P25 The complete set of twelve pieces and other Chopin works aroused extremely strong shocks among the masters and the audience present. Zhang Haochen used the encore to take nearly ten curtain calls and performed four additional pieces of music to thank the audience. Polish national television conducted a special interview and report on it. The music festival magazine said: "It shocked all the masters and audiences present with its flawless technique and the most beautiful music."

In March 2005, he went to the famous American Conservatory of Music (famous for cultivating talented young musicians) to take the entrance examination for the Curtis Institute of Music, and stood out with the best score among 115 outstanding piano major candidates from all over the world. Gaining great appreciation from the masters and experts present, he became the only Chinese contestant admitted among the 16 professional students who took the exam, including the best students from the Central Conservatory of Music. All teachers (***6) in the college regard him as their first student candidate. Finally, he was accepted as a disciple by the famous American piano master, piano educator, and Dean Curtis Grafman (Lang Lang’s teacher).

In March 2006, he participated in the 'Young Student Artistic Talent' competition held by the Philadelphia Orchestra and was sincerely praised by the judges composed of the orchestra's artistic director, conductor and chief conductor. Not only did he win first place in all instrumental music (a piano player has not won an award for 8 years), but he also won the Outstanding Achievement Award added by the organizing committee for his vivid interpretation of Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto. As a result, he was invited by the world-famous conductor Eschenbach to perform publicly in Philadelphia with the world-famous orchestra the Philadelphia Orchestra in September 2006.
