Textbook analysis:
"Axi Dances to the Moon" is also called the Moon Dance Song, which is popular among the Axi people of the Yi ethnic group in the Maitreya Mountains of Yunnan. On moonlit nights during festivals or off-farm days, the Axi people like to hold a "moon dance" in pine forests or open lawns. Participants are mostly young men and women. The boys held high-pitched flute, bass flute, yueqin, small sanxian, middle sanxian, major sanxian and other musical instruments, and danced while playing; the girls danced and clapped their hands along with the music, and sang "Dance to the Moon Song" when they were in high spirits. "Dance to the Moon Song" is very distinctive. The whole song is composed of three tones: do, mi, and sol, and adopts a 5/8 beat. When singing, inhale from both sides of the tongue in the first half of the fourth and fifth beats of each measure. The melody is lively, dynamic and distinctive.
