Xinghai Conservatory of Music was formerly the Guangzhou Music School founded in 1957, and its name changed several times.
In 1958, it was established as Guangzhou Music College.
In early 1965, it merged with the Guangdong Dance School to form the Guangdong Art College.
In 1969, it merged with the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts to form the Guangdong People's Art Institute.
In March 1978, it was renamed Guangzhou Music College.
In June 1981, it was established as Guangzhou Conservatory of Music with the approval of the State Council.
In December 1985, it was renamed Xinghai Conservatory of Music in memory of Xian Xinghai, a people’s musician from Guangdong.
