[Edit this paragraph] Plot introduction

The underworld figure Andy Lau (played by Andy Lau) is brave and fierce but very high-spirited. A gangster, in order to take care of his underachieving friend (played by Jacky Cheung), becomes a grudge against a ruthless gangster (played by Man Tsz-leung). He went to an outlying island to recuperate, and gradually fell in love with his cousin (played by Maggie Cheung) who came to Hong Kong to recuperate. However, his Jianghu status caused this relationship to suffer setbacks. The two finally decided to leave everything behind, but they couldn't defeat their fate. Andy originally intended to fade away from the world, but Jacky Cheung, who has always been a good man, impulsively stepped forward and volunteered to kill people for the gang boss. Andy Lau heard the news and rushed to stop it, but he could no longer undo the tragedy.

●This film is Wong Kar-wai’s directorial debut. Wong Kar-Wai combines his unique image style with traditional Hong Kong gangster action films, bringing MTV-style abstract vision and poetic romantic feeling into this film, thereby showing an alternative style that is different from other action films. The chivalrous emotions and tender love between the characters are handled elegantly but not stagnantly, and the broken storyline and messy color images are handled in a more sensory way. This kind of emotional film performance breaks through the stereotyped flaws of previous Hong Kong gangster action films, giving people a refreshing feeling. The artistic feel added to the commercial elements made it a very creative new action movie among many action movies of the year. "Carmen" also fully demonstrated the mystery and image beauty of Wong Kar-wai's subsequent films. He made this film stand out from an extremely secular and stereotyped Hong Kong film, thus winning the Hong Kong Film Award that year. of more than a dozen nominations. This film also allowed people to see another kind of acting charm possessed by idol stars. Wong Kar-Wai discovered the unique and mysterious feeling in several idol stars.

●I really like to watch the director’s debut film. Maybe the techniques at that time were immature, maybe the skills at that time were jerky, but the passion for movies at that time was definitely unparalleled, unlike what was possible later. There will be some directors who begin to become technical or artistic craftsmen and slowly lose their original passion for movies. This is the most terrifying thing.

●1988 is a bit far away. I was 11 years old. Who knows what I was doing. But one thing is for sure. I probably haven’t started wandering around in video studios yet. At that time, I might have known about Andy Lau, but it was absolutely impossible to know about Wong Kar-wai.

●But in this year, Wong Kar-wai completed his directorial debut - "Carmen in Mongkok".

●In the Year of the Dragon, the 27-year-old Andy Lau, the 27-year-old Jacky Cheung, the 24-year-old Maggie Cheung, and the 31-year-old Man Tsz-leung all gathered together under a big brother named Wong Kar-wai and started a journey. story. At that time, Andy Lau was like a real idol, youthful and invincible. At that time, Jacky Cheung was still like a reckless young man, straightforward and cute. At that time, Maggie Cheung was like a small light yellow flower with a pleasant fragrance. At that time, Wan Ziliang was not like Now his face is full of anger.

●The most important thing is that Wong Kar-wai did not wear sunglasses at that time, but wore a pair of ordinary black-rimmed glasses. Regarding this, I also caught a glimpse of it in the trailer in the DVD appendix.

At first glance, the film does not look like a Wong Kar-Wai film with a strong personal style. It may be thought of as an ordinary gangster movie, vendetta, big brother, little brother, and the woman next to the big brother. , loyalty and love, seem to be no different from those ordinary hero movies of the 1980s.

●Looking at it again, the main characters are actually marginalized people, and their strong sense of fate already has the tone of Wong Kar-Wai's later films. This film is not so much promoting the loyalty of Jianghu, but rather expressing the disgust and helplessness of Jianghu grudges. This is very different from ordinary Jianghu movies.

●Of course, the style of image processing that Director Wang is famous for is not particularly obvious, but there are still a few snapshots and slow motions that reflect a personal style that he began to pursue in the future.

●There is no voice-over monologue of the characters in the film at all. This is probably what makes the film feel least like Wong Kar-Wai's style.
