Master Hongyi’s works include "Song of the Three Treasures", "Three Hundred Couplets of Huayan Collection", "Collection of Nursing Paintings", etc.

1. "Song of Three Treasures"

Master Hongyi's most important work is "Song of Three Treasures", which is a song composed by Master Taixu for Quanzhou schoolchildren to worship Buddha in the morning and evening. This song expresses people's thinking about light, fire and suffering, as well as the pursuit of great compassion, great wisdom and great power. During his stay in Quanzhou, Master Hongyi also established the "Yuetai Buddhist Research Society" for the temple and helped organize ancient Buddhist scriptures in the temple. His work was not only widely sung at the time, but was also praised as "the earliest famous Buddhist song written in modern music notation."

2. "Three Hundred Couples of Huayan Collection"

Master Hongyi's work "Three Hundred Couples of Huayan Collection" is his research and analysis of the Huayan Sutra translated by Jin and Tang Dynasties. This work is also the calligraphy masterpiece of the modern eminent monk Hongyi. He pays attention to details in his practice and is calm and unhurried in the trivial matters of life, which shows his compassion. In addition, in Master Hongyi's works, he also mentioned his hobbies and contributions when he was young, as well as his journey of going to temples to lecture on law. Master Hongyi's calligraphy works and spiritual practice both demonstrate his unique insights and love for Buddhism.

3. "Collection of Paintings of Protecting Lives"

Master Hongyi's work "Collection of Paintings of Protecting Lives" is a work based on the Buddhist noble sentiment of compassion and non-killing. In his creation, he expressed the pricelessness of life and the value of peace through vivid pictures and sincere poems. Although he suffered distorted goodwill and vicious slander from the enemy during the war, he still firmly conveyed positive energy and encouragement to the anti-Japanese patriotic soldiers and the people of the country.

Introduction to Master Hongyi

Li Shutong is a famous musician, art educator, calligrapher, drama activist, and one of the pioneers of Chinese drama. After returning from studying in Japan, he worked as a teacher and editor. Later, he was ordained as a monk. His Buddhist name was Yanyin, and his nickname was Hongyi. Later, he was also known as Wanqing Laoren. He was later revered as Master Hongyi.

In 1913, he was employed as a music and painting teacher at Zhejiang Normal School (later changed to Zhejiang Provincial First Normal School). From 1915, he served concurrently as a music and painting teacher at Nanjing Normal University, and composed the first school song in the history of Nanjing University. On October 13, 1942, Master Hongyi passed away in the Wanqing Room of Wenling Nursing Home of Fujian Temple in Quanzhou.
