When I graduated from university in 1929, I met Mr. Cai Yuanpei, the Ministry of Education, who went to Shanghai to establish the "National Music School". Xiao Youmei (1884-1940, a native of Zhongshan, Guangdong) served as the principal, and Wei Hanzhang was appointed as the school's registrar. While teaching, Xiao Youmei and Wei Hanzhang also founded "Music Magazine" in the name of "Music Art and Literature Society".
Wei Hanzhang was good at writing lyrics, and Huang Zi was good at composing music. When the September 18th Incident broke out in 1931, the two collaborated to create "Anti-Enemy Song" to raise funds for the Northeast Volunteer Army. After it was performed by the school chorus, Spread throughout the country, the majestic and powerful singing inspired the people to rise up and resist the enemy. After the "September 18th" Incident, there were many national crises. From 1931 to 1936, he collaborated with Huang Zi and created "The Flag is Flying", "Homesickness", "Spring Thoughts", and "How Much of Spring", Use singing to call on and inspire people to love their country and hometown and fight bravely. Their most influential collaboration was the creation of my country's first oratorio based on the poetry of "Song of Everlasting Sorrow" by Bai Juyi in the Tang Dynasty. Wei Hanzhang wrote 10 lyrics for the oratorio "Song of Everlasting Sorrow", and Huang Zi composed 7 lyrics. After the school choir rehearsed and performed, the lyrics were well received and it became a model for music teaching. It is a pity that Huang Ziying died young, and the last three sections (the fourth, seventh, and ninth sections) of "Song of Everlasting Sorrow" could only be completed by his student Lin Shengxi as an addendum.
