The Mathematical Olympiad has the harmful effect of overthrowing talents, which is detrimental to children’s comprehensive learning and creates aversion to mathematics.
Yang Le, a well-known mathematician and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, clearly pointed out that large-scale promotion of Mathematical Olympiad education is not advisable. He said, is the Mathematical Olympiad or intensive training in mathematics beneficial to mathematics learning? I don't think so. Because the purpose of intensive training for a period of time is not to allow students to study systematically, but to forcibly instill the skills to solve certain partial problems.
The result is not only that the students’ mathematics learning ability cannot be improved, but some of their original interests may also be stifled, and their study of other courses is also weakened, which is detrimental to the overall development of the students.
In general, the Mathematical Olympiad was originally used to select and train students with mathematical talents, so the difficulty is naturally relatively high. But because of his extra points, many parents force their children to learn Mathematical Olympiad in order for their children to get into a good school.
However, most children do not have such talent or interest in mathematics, which seriously affects children's enthusiasm for learning, increases their learning burden, and has adverse effects.
