Michael Flatley was born in Chicago on July 16, 1958. Michael Flatley's parents were both from Ireland. His grandmother, a former Irish dancing champion, taught him how to dance when he was four, but not seriously. It wasn't until he was 11 years old that his mother (also an Irish dancing champion) began taking him to dance lessons. At that time, the teacher told him that it was too late to learn dance at the age of 11, but he remained unmoved because he had already admired Irish dance master Kevin Massey and was deeply influenced by him. Unexpectedly, this child, who was initially thought to be too late to learn to dance by his teacher, actually won the World Irish Dance Championship when he was 17 years old (1975), setting a record as the first non-European to win the championship. Later, he won the Irish dance championship in 13 countries (including the United States), and was the youngest recipient of the US National Heritage Fellowship personally awarded by former President Reagan. This honor is given to America's greatest artistic performers. In 1991, the National Geographic Society also declared Michael Flatley a "Living Treasure."

In addition, Mike Fraley is the Guinness World Record holder for kicking 35 times in 1 second.
