What are the minimum academic qualifications and subjects required to become a senior chemist in the Forensic Department of the Hong Kong Laboratory Department?

Basic entry requirements for the chemist rank:

1. Hold a first or second class honors degree in chemistry, biochemistry or forensic science awarded by a local university, or equivalent qualifications , and hold a master's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, forensic science, food science or environmental science from a local university, or equivalent qualifications.

2. Or hold a first- or second-class honors degree in chemistry, biochemistry or forensic science from a local university, or have equivalent academic qualifications, and have two years of relevant work experience after graduation.

Basic entry requirements for Technician II of the Government Laboratory:

1. Hold a diploma in chemical technology from the Hong Kong Polytechnic/Polytechnic University or the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education/Technical Institute/Institute of Technology , or equivalent academic qualifications.

2. Meet the language proficiency requirements and obtain Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination or the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination, or equivalent qualifications.

Extended information:

Starting from August 8, 2007, when recruiting civil servants, the government will require those who have passed the Hong Kong Secondary School Entrance Examination to obtain Grade C in Chinese Language and English Language (Course B) and Grade E will be administratively regarded as equivalent to Level 3 and Level 2 in Chinese Language and English Language respectively in the 2007 Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination.

Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree with chemistry, biochemistry or forensic science as the major subject, that is, two-thirds of the completed credits or examination papers must be in chemistry, biochemistry or forensic science.
