Jacky Cheung was born in Hong Kong, the second oldest child in the family, with an older brother and a younger sister. He has been interested in singing since he was a child and likes to practice singing along with records. In middle school, he tried to form a band with his friends. Before graduating from high school, he participated in a singing competition held by the school and won second place. After graduating from Chongwen English College in Hong Kong, he worked for the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Cathay Pacific Airways.

In 1984, he won the championship of the first Hong Kong 18 District Amateur Singing Contest with the song "The Love of the Earth"; in the same year, he signed a contract with PolyGram Records and officially entered the music scene. In March 1988, the Cantonese album "Last Night in the Dream" was released and its sales in Hong Kong were only a few thousand copies; and at several major music awards ceremonies in Hong Kong that year, Jacky Cheung also received nothing; so he began to appear in Lan Kwai Fong. bar, and developed a drinking habit.

Later, between 1989 and 1990, Alan Tam and Leslie Cheung withdrew from the Hong Kong Music Awards. Jacky Cheung seized the opportunity to become one of the main singers of PolyGram Records. From then on, it was out of control. In 2000, he entered the Singer Hall of Fame of the 1990s selected by Universal Music America. In the same year, he won the "Golden Needle Award" at the Top Ten Chinese Golden Songs Awards Ceremony. After that, he faded out of Hong Kong's music awards ceremonies. But he did not deliberately announce that he would no longer accept the award.
