Lu opera turned to Huangmei opera

Lu opera is popular in his hometown, and he grew up immersed in the music of Lu opera when he was a child. In 1958, thanks to his good erhu skills, he was admitted to the Anhui Provincial Art School with his solo "Good Night". He studied Lu Opera music for three years and learned how to compose. He said that his familiarity and love for Lu Opera far exceeded that of Huangmei Opera. He was the only one left among the four classmates in his class at first, and no one else learned from it. He still persevered and was determined to contribute to the art of Lu Opera. Make some achievements. However, just when he was ready to make great achievements after graduation, the school canceled the Lu Opera major. At that time, He Henong, who was studying Western music, was assigned to the Lu Opera Troupe, while Xu Daiquan was announced to stay in school and engage in teaching. Xu Daiquan didn't understand very much and thought that the leader had made a mistake. He thought that he should be assigned to the Lu Opera Troupe. But the reason given by the school leader convinced him: "We want to leave a seed for Lu Opera." But this seed has no chance to germinate, bloom, or bear fruit. The Provincial Art School did not recruit a Lu Opera class until 1993. During this period, Xu Daiquan's studies were useless for more than 30 years. He had no choice but to make up his mind to turn to Huangmei Opera. However, the music of Lu Opera and the music of Huangmei Opera are fundamentally different. In order to master this opera as soon as possible, Xu Daiquan adopted a stupid method - taking singing lessons with students from the Huangmei Opera performance class. When the teacher was in class, he listened and took notes. Due to his hard work, he learned faster than teenagers. Later, he basically wrote all the Huangmei Opera teaching repertoire in the art school.

Unlike many artists who are engaged in opera creation or performance who are opposed to their children learning art, Xu Daiquan did not hesitate to pass on his hobby to his daughter. The names of his two children are all inspired by opera and music. His son is named Xu Dong and his daughter is named Xu Qiang. Together they are "Dong Qiang".

This line of work is both bitter and difficult. It’s hard because there are too many things to learn when engaging in opera and music. However, people who engage in opera music often have to deal with poverty and loneliness. Because of this, there are very few people who study opera music. Like many composers, Xu Daiquan devoted himself wholeheartedly and emotionally as soon as he entered creation. When I can't find the right feeling, I won't be able to write a single note for a piece of work for seven or eight days. The state at that time was really like sitting, walking, waking, and dreaming. I was obsessed with it and had trouble sleeping and eating. Sometimes when writing some tragic arias, I would cry and feel sad while singing, as if I was stupid or crazy. And once the creation is completed, the relief is indescribable. When the actors finish recording, sitting in front of the speakers and listening to the arias carefully, the intoxication is also indescribable.

Achievements

Xu Daiquan said that he has done three jobs in his life, one is teaching, the other is creation, and the third is research. Teaching is his job.
