Cicada's singing
the music of cicadas

[ French] Fabres

Cicada likes singing very much. There is a cymbal-like instrument in the cavity behind its wing. It's not enough. We need to put a castanet on the chest to increase the intensity of the sound. Indeed, there is a kind of cicada who sacrificed a lot to satisfy his hobby of music. Because of this huge castanet, the living organs have nowhere to be placed, so they have to be pressed into the smallest corner of the body. Of course, if you want to devote yourself to music, then you have to shrink the internal organs to place musical instruments.

But unfortunately, the music that it likes so much can't interest others at all. Even I haven't found the purpose of its singing. The usual guess is that it is calling for its companions, but it is obvious that this opinion is wrong.

Cicada and I have lived next to each other for fifteen years now, and every summer is almost two months long. They never leave my sight, and their songs never leave my ears. I usually see them in a row on the soft branches of Shinohara hanging wood, and the singer sits shoulder to shoulder with his partner. Straws are inserted into the bark, and they drink without moving. When the sun sets, they follow the branches with slow and steady steps, looking for a warm place. They never stop singing, whether they are drinking or acting.

So it seems that they are not yelling at their companions. Think about it. If your companions were in front of you, you probably wouldn't spend the whole month yelling at them!

Actually, as I think, even cicadas can't hear the songs they sing. Just want to use this tough method to force others to listen.

it has very clear vision. Its five eyes will tell it what is happening around and above. As long as it sees someone running, it will immediately stop singing and fly away quietly. But the noise is not enough to disturb it. You can stand behind it and talk, whistle, clap your hands and hit stones. It's even quieter than this. If a sparrow didn't see you, it should have flown away in panic. The calm cicada continued to make a sound, as if nothing had happened.

once, I borrowed two earthenware spears for a peasant's wedding, and they were filled with gunpowder, which was enough for the most important celebration. I put it under the shinohara hanging tree outside the door. We opened the window carefully in case the glass was broken. The cicada on the branch overhead can't see what lies below.

the six of us waited below, listening eagerly to what would happen to the band overhead. "touch!" When the gun was released, it sounded like thunder. Not affected at all, it continued to sing. It shows no signs of panic and disturbance, and the quality and quantity of the sound have not changed at all. The second shot, like the first shot, had no effect.

I think, after this experiment, we can be sure that cicada can't hear, just like a deaf person who is extremely deaf. It can't feel its own sound at all!
