Analysis:
Wang Wei was born into a scholarly family, and his ancestors had been officials for generations. He grew up in such an official family, received a good education since childhood, and was very talented. He could write poems and articles at the age of nine. He and his younger brother Wang Jin were recognized by their fathers as "talents", which is what is now called Gifted children.
Wang Wei had a poetry reputation when he was more than ten years old. He often traveled among the powerful and was especially appreciated by King Qi. The provincial examination was going to be held soon. A candidate wanted to win Jieyuan (the first place in the provincial examination) and asked Jinshi Zhang Jiugao to communicate with the princess. The princess informed the examiner and gave the solution to the candidate. Wang Wei also took the exam and also wanted to get Jieyuan. When he learned the news, he asked King Qi for help. So King Qi thought of a countermeasure. He asked Wang Wei to put on gorgeous clothes, bring a pipa and a scroll of poetry, and go to the princess together. The princess saw that Wang Wei was an unfamiliar face and asked King Qi, "Who is this person?" "A luther player who knows the music well!" King Qi replied. The princess immediately asked him to play. Wang Wei played a new song with a mournful tone, which moved the whole audience. The princess had never heard of it and asked, "What's the name of such a touching piece of music?" The king replied, "Yulunpao", and an expression of approval appeared on the princess's face. Seeing the opportunity, King Qi stepped forward and said, "This young man is also very talented in literature!" Wang Wei took out the poetry scroll he had prepared earlier from his arms and presented it to the princess. When the princess saw it, her expression was even more surprised and she said: "These are my favorite works. I thought they were the works of the ancients, but I didn't expect them to be made by you!" King Qi thought that the opportunity was not to be missed: "This young man wants to participate in this year's competition. Wouldn’t it be a great thing if he could be admitted as Jieyuan in the provincial examination?” The princess then ordered the examiner to ask Wang Wei to be Jieyuan from high school. Wang Wei rose to the top in one fell swoop.
In his early years, Wang Wei dated all wealthy and powerful people, and he lived a very proud life. But after losing his wife when he was about thirty years old, his attitude toward life changed a lot. He never married again, and he was a lover. Living alone in a room for thirty years, he was indifferent to worldly affairs and no longer cared about official career. He wore simple clothes and worshiped the Buddha. Play the piano, compose poems, burn incense and chant every day. Therefore, the poems he wrote show a completely different realm from others. Won the reputation of "Poetry Buddha".
Wang Wei has many talents, including poetry, calligraphy, painting, music, etc., all of which are praised by people. At that time, the leaders of the painting world were Li Sixun and his son. The Li family used bright colors and created brilliant and detailed paintings. Later generations respected them as the ancestors of the Northern Sect. His original ink landscape painting, on the one hand, got rid of the cumbersome and delicate style of Li Sixun's green mountains and green waters, and on the other hand, it made up for Wu Daozi's shortcomings of having a pen but no ink. Therefore, everyone recognized him as the originator of ink painting, and created a light ink painting method. His influence has been far-reaching, such as the great painters Dong Yuan and Mi Fu of the Song Dynasty, Huang Gongwang of the Yuan Dynasty, and Dong Qichang of the Ming Dynasty. His painting style has been continuously developed, and he has the reputation of "world-leading articles and unparalleled paintings through the ages". Later generations respect Wang Wei as the leader of the Southern Sect. Ancestor. Su Dongpo, a literary master of the Song Dynasty, once praised: "When you taste Mojie's poems, there are paintings within the poems; when you look at Mojie's paintings, there are poems within the paintings." Unfortunately, his paintings have been lost, and what we see today are all imitations of later generations.
