First of all, getting familiar with the music you want to arrange is the first step. My own image of music is one that I don’t even compliment, so the way to get familiar with the melody is in the software. Input the melody into a track, and then listen carefully. After listening to it a few times, try to replace the melody with an instrument that is more suitable for it (that is, choose a timbre), although this melody may not necessarily be in the music you arrange. (The main melody rarely appears in the accompaniment of songs~~), but I still insist on doing this, at least to exercise my understanding of the coordination of melody and timbre. Have a chance to attend an open class on arrangement at Dole Conservatory of Music! Hope it helps you
When you are initially familiar with this piece of music, you should have a more prominent mental impression. This may be a rhythm (for example: you will have a clearer understanding of the melody) (drum beat), haha~~After all, I am a drummer, so I will think of this first; it may also be a very short melody. There are probably parts of the music you are facing that will give you a feeling of déjà vu, then you think Find out which music this feeling comes from; it may be a timbre, like the timbre suitable for this melody mentioned above; or it may be a style of artistic conception. Based on this knowledge, you can preliminarily judge whether this piece is national music, pop music, or Jazz or symphony.
If you really don’t feel anything, it doesn’t matter~~~You can rest for a while and then listen again. If this doesn’t work, then find a friend with better musical awareness and feeling to help you find it. Come up with the points above!
After completing the above work, the next step is to start arranging the music based on the previous knowledge. What I say here is different from the knight’s article, because it is something I have developed over a long period of time based on my own situation. I hope everyone has different opinions on this issue regarding the habit of arranging. Before officially starting the specific arranging work below, of course, the chords of the music must be determined. In this step, I am used to trying to mark the chords on paper first. Here is what I say: It's roughly marked out (you may add other chords in the detailed steps of arranging according to the style), and then use the piano (keyboard or guitar can be used) to follow the melody, bar by bar. Listen to the chords you wrote, and carefully feel whether these chords are suitable, or whether they feel comfortable here. As for how to use 7th chords and higher superimposed chords, everyone has their own knowledge and understanding, so I won’t go into details here. After the chords are determined, you can proceed to the next step - detailed and lengthy arrangement...
In the first case, grasp the style based on a rhythm and try to add a few pieces of your own A more familiar instrument. Don’t rush to use a lot of instruments at this time, you can decide one by one. The first thing I thought of was BASS, because rhythm and bass are the most closely related in music. When arranging BASS, you need to combine rhythm, harmony, and melody characteristics, and the previous and next bars should be connected... Let's put it this way It would be too wordy. After the BASS is written, you can slowly add more instruments based on the combination of rhythm, BASS and melody, and with an understanding of the emotional strength.
The second situation is easier, that is to draw on the original musical style of the melody that you are familiar with to start the arrangement. You can even directly draw on other people's orchestration... ...and that's also the case. A good learning opportunity~~
In the third case, fixed timbres and melodies can give you a preliminary understanding of music, light, powerful, gentle, cheerful, narrative, tense... ...Based on these awareness, you can properly understand the performance of various timbres, and then select the instrumental parts suitable for a certain part of the music one by one, and then continue to add other...
In the last case, after you know the general style, you can find some similar music that is closer to your piece to think about their orchestration. If you really can’t find it, then think about music in this style. What are some common musical instruments? Try using a few first, and slowly you will get the idea~~~
