The earliest prototype of CET-4 and CET-6 is a widely popular English proficiency test in East China Petroleum University (now China Petroleum University). In 1984, the Ministry of Education organized an English teaching seminar in Petroleum University, which coincided with the foreign language proficiency test held in the school. During the meeting, everyone was attracted by the foreign language proficiency test of the school.

Taking this meeting as an opportunity, the English proficiency test began to be promoted to universities all over the country. In 1986, the first CET-4 test was held. In 1987, CET-4 was officially changed to twice a year. In January 1989, CET-6 was added.
