I came across this documentary by chance and watched it twice in a row.
When this documentary was filmed in 2012, there were only 32 comfort women survivors in China, which is exactly what the title of the film means. From 200,000 to 32, a painful history is fading away. By recording the life of a comfort woman and her son, the director made this history available to the public, allowing every Chinese to remember history and not forget the shame.
This is a tough old woman. She is still healthy and bright at the age of ninety-two. Without the director's lens, it would be difficult for us to discover her humiliating past.
People are always reluctant to bring up bad memories, even if they are in the past, it will be devastated if they are brought up again now. Regarding the pain she suffered sixty-nine years ago, the old woman's eyes were filled with tears in the camera, and every word she spoke was heartbreaking. I admire her. Not every survivor has the courage to mention it again, but grandma’s oral narrative brings history back to life, and every Chinese should remember it.
After the liberation of New China, comfort women were discriminated against and unable to return to normal life. The old lady said: "It was really hard at that time. My daughter died a month after she escaped from the Japanese." Every sentence made people feel sad. She added, "My husband was blessed with a good life, but he died young, leaving me alone as an old man." As an audience member, I don't know how many feeble words I can use to describe my state of mind at this moment. She once denied her own life. She once committed suicide by taking medicine, but failed. That period of history caused harm to the body and soul. We are not victims and should not discriminate, but admire them.
The 68-year-old man in the film was the child the grandmother was carrying when she was arrested. This is an innocent life. The old woman's husband does not want this child, but she does. She is kind-hearted and does not want to treat an innocent life like this. But it is precisely this that has caused this 68-year-old man to suffer discrimination throughout his life. He is of mixed race and is discriminated against because of his Japanese ancestry.
He said: "(The Japanese) have been carried away for a lifetime and spoiled for a lifetime," so they have no wife, no children, and no one to rely on.
He even said: "If you get sick, just drink pesticides." Life is full of despair.
He was not wrong, and neither was the old lady. He could not choose his life form. It was the national humiliation that made him end up in this form. People should not discriminate against him. He should have a normal life, not bearing any crime, and live like every Chinese.
At the end of the film, the old lady recalled the beautiful memories of her thirteenth or fourteenth year, and she smiled as she talked, which was very cute. These are the few memories of the old woman who can laugh in her life. The singing voice in the memory is melodious and moving. She hummed softly, as if she was in that time, carefree and innocent.
It rains in the sky and the road becomes slippery
If you fall, you will climb on your own
If you are sad, you will be relieved by yourself
If you shed your own tears, wipe them away
This world is so wonderful
You have to save your life to eat wild things
I admire everyone, and hope that history will fade away and people's respect will erase the Get rid of their pain.
