"Parasite" will be a movie that better represents and defines director Bong Joon-ho's status in the future. It eliminates complexity and simplifies it, has a precise structure and advances layer by layer. The director's ability to control the entire film has obviously surpassed his masterpiece "Memories of Murder" 16 years ago.
It is both a commercial masterpiece and a great art film. It perfectly mobilizes the elements that make up a movie - editing, composition, music, camera movement, script and characters, etc. - in an atmosphere full of humor and suspense, and in a symphonic rhythm processing, Finally, a cruel theme emerges.
Bong Joon-ho's thematic expression does not stay superficially on the surface of class antagonism, but looks at the social ecology, reproducing the living conditions of human beings like "little strong" in Imamura Shohei's movies in another form: dirty. Dirty yet tenacious, dirty but vital. This is the tone of the movie. Although it has changed several times, this tone drives the film forward like a drumbeat in a symphony, which allows the film to transcend the pessimism caused by the superficial divide between rich and poor.
Because as a combination of a commercial film and an art film (of course it is also a genre film), it is so outstanding. It's so good that you can't fault it, the story pace is extremely smooth, the plot development is as enjoyable as a roller coaster, and by the end it's still unfinished, like being on drugs. I admire Bong Joon-ho for this. This kind of elite director who is a top student but still works hard is needed in this era. When everything seems peaceful, we need a tearing, explosive, bloody force to break the tranquility.
This is the best of times and the worst of times.
