Xue Wei was originally from Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, and was born in Kaifeng, Henan Province. He studied piano at the age of 8, was admitted to the High School Affiliated to Shanghai Conservatory of Music at the age of 14, and was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music at the age of 19. He studied under professors such as Lin Yaoji, Zheng Shisheng, Zhou Binyou, and Chen Xinzhi. In 1985, he received help from the Mayor of London and was funded by Midland Bank and Kleinwort Benson sponsored a master class at the Guildhall Academy of Music and Drama in the UK to study with Professor Nieman. Since 1989, at the age of 25, he has been employed as a professor at the Royal Academy of Music, becoming the youngest professor in the history of the academy. Xue Wei won awards at the 1981 China National Violin Competition, the 1982 British Carl Flesh International Violin Competition, and the 1983 Japan International Music (Violin) Competition. In 1986, Xue Wei won the silver medal at the 8th International Tchaikovsky Violin Competition in Moscow. Just two weeks later, he returned to London to compete in the Carl Flesch International Violin Competition, winning the gold medal and all other awards.

In May 2004, the United Nations World Fund for Natural Medicine appointed Xue Wei as its honorary chairman. At the same time, he was also appointed as a senior consultant by the China Environmental Protection Foundation.

In March 2005, Xue Wei officially became a full-time professor at the Central Conservatory of Music.
