In 1901, he went to Japan to study, studying piano and vocal music at the Tokyo Music School, and studying education at Imperial University. In 1913, he went to Germany to study at the Leby Conservatory of Music and Leby University. After obtaining a doctorate, he returned to China in 1920. It lasted for eighteen years. When he was in Japan, he participated in the Tongmenghui and protected Mr. Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary activities. After returning to China in 1920, he successively taught and held leadership positions at the Music and Physical Education College of Beijing Women's Normal School, the Music Transmission Institute of Peking University and the Music Department of Beijing Art College. With the support of Cai Yuanpei, the National Conservatory of Music was founded in Shanghai in 1927.
