Yue, a first-class Chinese word, is pronounced as lào or liáo, lè, luò, yào and yuè. It was first seen in Oracle Bone Inscriptions, and its original meaning is a stringed instrument, which extended to pleasure, make …… pleasure, etc. Shuo Wen Jie Zi is considered as the general name of five tones and eight tones.
The word "Le" in Oracle Bone Inscriptions (figure A, see the 3728th piece of Newly Acquired Oracle Bones in Beijing and Tianjin after World War II) is a pictographic and knowing character, with the wooden structure of the string itself below (figure A1) and the string made of silk above (figure A2), indicating that its original meaning is a stringed instrument. Figure B (see Le Ding) is the word "Le" in the inscriptions of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, and the structure of the music stand has changed from the shape of Figure A1 to the shape of Figure B1. After the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, the word "music" developed into figure C, and a drum was added between the two silk strings (figure C1), which mixed percussion and strings together. Figure C1 is "Bai (B?)", which is used as the phonetic symbol of the word "Le", making the word "Le" a pictophonetic character. The word "Le" in Xiao Zhuan (Figure D, see Shuo Wen Jie Zi), the word "Le" in Li Shu (Figure E, see Hao Tai Wang Bei) and the word "Le" in regular script (Figure F) are all handed down from the bronze inscription of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (Figure C). In the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the word "le" appeared in the cursive script of Wang Xizhi, a great calligrapher (Figure G), so after the Six Dynasties, the folk custom word "le" appeared in cursive script (Figure H), which eventually became the simplified word "le" used today.
