Historical evolution of the School of Music of Guangxi University of Arts

Guangxi Art Institute was founded in 1938 and was originally named "Guangxi Provincial Capital Basic School Art Teacher Training Class" (referred to as "Art Teacher Class"). It is the earliest professional school to cultivate art talents in Guangxi. The music group in the art teacher class has continued to grow through the efforts of several generations of Guangxi art teachers, and has developed into the current Conservatory of Music of Guangxi University of the Arts.

The Conservatory of Music is an important secondary college under the Guangxi University of the Arts. It is also the only higher art college in Guangxi that specializes in cultivating talents in music performance, music creation, music education and music research. Important teaching institution. The School of Music of Guangxi University of the Arts has made an irreplaceable contribution to the construction of music culture in Guangxi and has had a certain influence on the history of modern Chinese music. The traditional spirit of “cultivating true, kind and beautiful souls to realize a true, kind and beautiful society” and the academic style of diligence, rigor, truth-seeking, and innovation continue to flourish here and are passed down from generation to generation.

In the spring of 1938, with the active planning of Xu Beihong and Man Qianzi, the music inspector of the Department of Education at the time, the existing site of the "Academy of Fine Arts" in Zhongshan Park, Guilin was used. A six-month "Guangxi Provincial Capital National Basic School Art Teacher Training Class" (evening class) was launched to recruit current primary and secondary school teachers in Guilin. The purpose is to provide short-term art professional training to primary and secondary school teachers and improve Guilin's art Teaching staff. At that time, there were 83 students in total, including 35 in the music group. The class teacher is Mr. Man Qianzi.

In the summer of 1938, Wu Bochao, a famous music educator, composer and conductor who was one of the pioneers of music education in my country, came to Guangxi from Hunan to serve as the head teacher of this "music group".

In February 1940, Wu Bochao went to Chongqing to serve as the dean of the National Conservatory of Music, and was succeeded by Zhang Jiayao, chief of the Graphics and Music Section of the Provincial Department of Education. In August, the class was officially renamed the Guangxi Provincial Art Teacher Training Class, with independent administration. The class is located in Zhengyang Building, Wangcheng, and enrolls students in the second two-year senior class and one-year junior class. In May 1941, Ma Weizhi succeeded the class teacher. With his efforts, the scale of the art class continued to grow, and the third two-year senior class was recruited in the autumn. In the summer of 1942, the first class of one-year research class was admitted. In July 1943, the third advanced research class graduated. Due to financial difficulties, it was temporarily suspended and transferred to a normal school. In August, we were ordered to recruit one new senior class and one new junior class each. In late May 1944, it was allowed to admit three-year and five-year freshmen. The Battle of Hunan and Guangxi began in late July 1944. In November, the entire city of Guilin fell, and the art class was forced to evacuate Yangshuo.

The music teachers who taught in the art class at that time were: Man Qianzi, Wu Bochao, Ma Weizhi, Lu Huabai, Di Runjun, Hu Ran, Yao Mu, Liu Shixin, Zhen Boxei, Guo Kesu (Xue Liang) , Shi Sifen, Ou Mubo, etc.

In 1946, the art class and the private Rongmen Art College merged and were renamed "Guangxi Art College". Ma Weizhi was appointed as the principal and enrolled 19 students in the two-year music department. The music department offers courses such as vocal music, piano, music theory, harmony, counterpoint, cantata, audio-visual ear training, music history, etc. There are no professional classes.

The school moved to Wanshoushan Temple near Elephant Trunk Hill in Guilin City (the former site of the Guangxi Provincial Government), and enrolled five-year students for the first time (all enjoying public funding) ), including 12 students in the music department, divided into three professional classes: vocal music, piano and orchestral music, and composition. Jiang Xi serves as the director of the music department.

In October 1951, the art school was reorganized. Man Qianzi was transferred as the director of the music department, and Yang Yangyang was transferred from Guangzhou to take over as the principal. In the autumn of 1953, according to the adjustment arrangements of colleges and universities across the country, Guangxi Art College was abolished, and some teachers and students were merged into Central and South Music College (Wuhan) along with the music department.

In March 1958, Guangxi Art College was reestablished. The school is temporarily run on the campus of Guangxi University for Nationalities located in Xixiangtang, Nanning City. Yuan Siyao, Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of Guangxi University for Nationalities, is the principal of Guangxi Art College, and Dong Qixiang (female) and Man Qianzi are vice presidents. Chen Liang is appointed as the director of the music department, and Chen Fumei is appointed as the party branch secretary of the department (in November, Xue Bifang was transferred to take over as the party branch secretary of the department). The music department has three majors: composition, vocal music, and instrumental music. The academic system is tentatively designated as a two-year junior college, and the training objectives are Mainly to provide music cadres to cultural centers in various counties and cities in Guangxi. In order to support art education in minority areas in Guangxi, teachers and graduates were transferred to Guangxi Art College from major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, and Guangzhou to form a team of high-level and capable art teachers.

In September 1959, the Department of Music admitted four-year undergraduate students majoring in vocal music, instrumental music, and composition for the first time. The academic system of the original 58-level majors was changed to a two-year junior college and a four-year undergraduate degree. At the same time, for the first time, the juvenile music class (later the third grade class) was recruited for the five-year consistent system (starting from primary school graduation). It also enrolled for the first time three-year students majoring in music, art, and drama in the preparatory class (the starting point for junior high school graduation), including the music major (later the second class of middle school).

In April 1960, with the approval of the Guangxi District People's Government, Guangxi Arts College was upgraded to "Guangxi Arts College" and officially changed the junior college system to a four-year undergraduate program. In July, it moved to the original site of Guangxi Teacher Training School on the bank of Nanhu Lake in Nanning City - the current site of Guangxi Art Institute. Yue Ping serves as the president and secretary of the party committee of the college, and Man Qianzi serves as the vice president.

From 1965 to 1971, there was no enrollment due to the Four Clean-ups and the Cultural Revolution.

After June 1966, teaching in the entire college came to a standstill due to the Cultural Revolution.

In March 1972, the Department of Revolutionary Literature and Art of Guangxi University of the Arts was established, and the teaching of the entire department was divided into two groups: music and art.

In March 1976, the Department of Revolutionary Literature and Art was renamed the Department of Art Normal University, with a focus on both music and fine arts. In September 1978, it began to recruit undergraduate students majoring in music teaching.

In March 1988, the Art Normal Department was abolished, and the music education major was merged with the music department.

In July 1995, based on the approval of the Guangxi District Education Commission to restore the Art Normal Department, the music education major was separated from the Music Department to establish the "Music Normal Department."

In December 2003, according to the needs of the development of education, the school upgraded each department to a second-level college. The Department of Music was renamed as the School of Music, and the Department of Music Normal School was renamed as the School of Music Education.

In December 2008, the School of Music of Guangxi University of the Arts merged with the School of Music Education to form the new School of Music of Guangxi University of the Arts.

At this point, the Conservatory of Music has entered a new stage of historical development, and has achieved remarkable results in various aspects such as discipline construction, talent training, faculty building, teaching and scientific research, etc., which has laid a solid foundation for building Guangxi University of the Arts into a prestigious institution. With national artistic characteristics, it has laid a solid foundation for a comprehensive art college that has certain influence in Southeast Asia and is among the advanced ranks of similar universities in the country.
