the power of music
did you finish after meeting someone for the first time? Hello! ? ,? How are you? And then what do you say? How do we make friends with others? Psychologists have talked about the importance of body language, appearance and clothes, but psychologists have not shown their due enthusiasm for the study of what specific topics to talk about. Recently, there was such a study that subjects were in contact for six weeks, and it was found that the most popular topic in their conversation was music. When we first met, what role did music play? Can we judge that person's personality from music?
There are quite a lot of people talking about music. In the first week, on average, 58% are talking about music, while the other conversations add up to 37%. Those topics include books, movies, TV, football and clothes.
the accuracy of music in measuring people's personality
why do people like to use music as an introduction to communication? people may think that music can indirectly tell a person's personality. For this reason, the second question arises: How accurate is music as an indicator to measure people's personality?
In order to find out this question, participants were asked to make individual judgments on people's personalities on ten songs.
Compare the results of the participants on the standard types of Big Five personality traits, which are openness based on experience, extroversion, agreeableness, responsibility and emotional stability. The overall results show that music preferences can accurately convey a person's personality. Among the above five personality traits, the openness based on experience is the most popular, followed by extroversion and emotional stability. On the other hand, music preference does not indicate whether a person has a sense of responsibility.
personality represented by music preference
preference for American vocal music: extroversion
preference for country music: emotional stability. Judging from the indication, this is a bit strange, because country music makes people's hearts beat. Either it urges people to listen to country music when they are emotionally stable, or country music has a calming effect on emotional instability.
Preference for Jazz: Intellectuality
Another question is why people listen to special types of music. There is a theory that people look for music for aesthetic and cognitive reasons. There is also that people seek music to manage their mood: if I want to be more excited at night, I will play dance music. Music also points to identity, and people express a way of looking at themselves by choosing music. It seems reasonable to combine all these theories together.
It should be added that the average age of the subjects selected in this study is around 18 years old, which cannot represent other people of different ages. Experience tells me that young people like talking about music more than old people. This raises a question: Is music, as the main topic of conversation, common at different ages?
Although the research is limited, it is quite effective to talk about music as a way to contact with another person. ;
