Brazilian music has attracted world attention regardless of its artistic form or popular characteristics. Antônio Carlos Gomes, an internationally renowned composer in the 19th century, was a Brazilian. His works had an Italian flavor, including an opera based on Alencar's "The Guaraní". Heitor Villalobos also achieved international fame in the 20th century, with works based mainly on indigenous themes and instruments.
