Detailed explanation of Oberlin College’s professional settings

Among the liberal arts colleges in the United States, one college occupies a very unique position, which is Oberlin College in Ohio. Oberlin College was founded in 1833. Two years after its founding, it decided to admit students regardless of race. Not only that, Oberlin College became the first institution of higher learning in the United States to implement coeducational education in 1837. The first black female college student in the United States graduated from here in 1850. In 1853, Oberlin College hired the first female college teacher in the United States. Before the Civil War, Oberlin College was one of the important stops on the "Underground Railroad" for black slaves from the South to escape to the North. In 1858, in order to rescue a captured fugitive slave, four students and one teacher in Oberlin spent nearly three months in jail. Before the 20th century, a total of 128 blacks graduated from Oberlin College, accounting for almost one-third of the total number of black bachelors in the country.
