Walking to the West is a local folk song in Shanxi. It is said that it has been circulating for one or two hundred years. This song can be sung not only by Shanxi people, but also by many people in neighboring Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi, and even in Ningxia, Qinghai and Gansu.

The song goes west. In the 197s, it was re-adapted by the famous singer Zhu Fengbo and sung in the north and south of the country, which gave the song a new look, but kept the flavor of the original song.

During the Qianlong period of Qing Dynasty, the population reached 3 million, and the contradiction between people and land was acute. A large number of poor people in the mainland were forced by the pressure of life to make a living and made large-scale spontaneous migration. "Going to the west" is an immigration activity in which thousands of people from Shanxi and Shaanxi have flocked to Guihuacheng, Tumote, Chahar and Erdos to make a living since the Qing Dynasty. The northern Shaanxi folk song "Walking West" was born in this historical background.
